October 1975
FrankI LAID ON MY BED, SO EXHAUSTED FROM WORK, I HAD YET CHANGED. I was so tempted to close my eyes and fall asleep. But just as I was about to, two owls began to peck at my window.
I stood up and opened the window. The birds flew in. My family barn owl dropped a letter first. The other owl, I had not recognized, stood waiting for me to pry the parchment from its beak.
I took the letter from the unknown bird and gave him a treat. With that, he flew away.
I placed the letter on my desk and bent down to pick the other. Alice's beautiful name caressed the parchment. Without waiting, I broke the seal and opened it.
Frank,
I really wish you were here. You've always been so good at potions and I think Professor Slughorn thinks I'm you. Constantly picking on me to answer questions. I'd get half of them wrong without my partner. She's constantly whispering the answers in my ear. Wish you could tutor me a bit. That would be nice. To have something familiar again.
I think with the more time that passes, the harder it gets. Especially without you by my side. I just miss everything so much.
I can't wait to see you in a couple of days. I miss hugging you. And well, just you in general.
Rock has started to sleep with me in the kitchen. Surprising, I know. I think because the majority of the house-elves leave, it's calming for him. There's even this little tunnel for the animals that lead to the kitchen. How cute is that? He doesn't stay all night. Probably because he gets bored. Or maybe I scare him off with my nightmares, I don't know. It's just nice to have him with me when I fall asleep. It's like a protector, I guess.
Let me know where to meet you on Saturday,
Love you,
Alice
I sighed. I knew this was a hard week. Her letters were getting shorter and shorter. Less detail, but just enough so I wouldn't worry. But I did. I always worried. Especially because today was Halloween. The first major holiday without her family.
I wrote to her a letter that almost could be considered a love letter. I sent it off with a bag of sweets.
I looked at the other letter and picked it up.
Frank,
Alice is really good at putting on a face. At least, that's what I'm assuming she's doing. I mean, her entire family just passed away and she's always seen with a smile on her face. Every once in a while, if you're watching closely, her eyes sadden. Sometimes, her body physically reacts to things. Like if Lily talks about her parents, or if Marlene talks about her brothers. She breaks for a split second but collects herself fast enough before people can question her.
