Calliope and Sam had gotten Dean back from being a demon, only to have to deal with trying to get the Mark of Cain off of him. Dean began to change over the year, the Mark changing him from the inside. They began to try everything they can imagine to save Dean from the Mark, and in the process, they manage to lose their close friend Charlie. After losing Charlie, everything changes inside Dean, he hates Sam for Charlie's death and he goes after the family that killed her. Realizing that Dean was at his end, Castiel and Calliope both try to stop him from becoming the monster that he believed he was. He beats Castiel, and Calliope tries to stop him, and he ends up damaging her the most, but knocking her down the stairs. After that Calliope took the risk, and she took in the rest of her grace, becoming full Nephilim, but even that was not enough to save Dean.
As Sam and Calliope stood before Dean, who had summoned Death to end his life, they told him that he was still good, and in the end they get through to Dean, and Dean ends up killing death. As they get ready to leave, lightning suddenly appears and the Mark is then magically removed. Thinking things were better, that Dean was finally free, they leave, and lightning begins to appear all around. Suddenly black smoke erupts from the ground, and they see a black cloud forming. The three of them realized what Death had warned them about the Darkness was coming.
