Everyone continued around the museum to look at their own family history. Hanabusa and I walked through the halls of the Kaname clan's history together. "I've never seen you and Lord Kaname so close."
"Ours is a love-hate relationship. Though if I were to be honest, I've never truly hated Kaname. Nor truly loved him, for that matter."
"Was he annoying?"
"Not at all. He's a genius. There are things only pureblood vampires can do, and being suppressed for so long, I haven't fully gotten the grasp at it yet." I took a pause. "Aristocratic vampires live until they no longer have the will to live. After a thousand years, three thousand, would you still have the will to live? What do you have to live for when everyone you've known has died. When your lover has passed. I don't know how anyone could do it. And Kaname, I completely understand waiting for your wife, but you can only wait so long. Once you decide to love someone else, it's so complicated. How would you not want to go back? Your first love is so special."
"Aren't you Lord Kaname's backup wife still?"
"Yes, I am."
"I'm jealous, you know."
I laughed. "By the time he would actually need me, it would be long after Yuki and you would be gone."
"Do you honestly think you'll out live us?"
"No doubt about it. We have no choice."
"No choice? What does that mean?"
I turned to him. "Kaname and I aren't like other vampires. If we lose the will to live, we won't die. We'll just be miserable. That's why we need each other. That's why we have a love-hate relationship. Besides, Kaname still has lots to teach me again. How to be a pureblood. But we have lots of time for that."
"I'm going to out live her..." Hanabusa sighed. "But you're going to out live me. Why wait for so long? Why would you be okay with me marrying someone else?"
"Why don't you ask Kaname why he's okay with me marrying you?"
"Do you think deep down he doesn't like it?"
"I don't think he was ever expecting me to be here. But I'm glad he's done something nice to me and allowed me to meet you. I'm hoping one day, we can work on making new and improved synthetic blood."
His eyes went wide. "We could use your blood and imitate it."
"That's what I've been trying to do."
"That's genius."
I whispered to him. "Somewhere hidden in my memories, there's the secret of becoming a pureblood vampire from human."
"So it's possible to make more purebloods without children?"
"It's possible."
"Would you want to create more purebloods?"
"I don't know. I want to do whatever Kaname wants to do. I trust his choices, even if they aren't exactly what I want at the moment. Kaname wants total peace, just like I do. What do you want?"
Hanabusa had to think about it. "Peace between humans and vampires... that would ruin vampire culture though. If humans found out about vampires, everything would change. But Yuki is very accepting of us."
"But Yuki isn't just any human though..."
"Can you not tell me anything more than these little weird things?"
"That's up to Kaname."
He looked down. "Lord Kaname... I don't understand why he wouldn't want you. Why he wouldn't want to marry you."
