FLETCHER

I kept an eye on Eden as she walked out the door. I didn’t want to monopolize her time, but I was also kicking myself in the ass for not getting her phone number or anything. She wasn’t very detailed as to why she was back in town, but I wanted to know why. Seeing her brought back a lot of feelings and I wanted to know more before I let my emotions get involved.

She must have turned a lot of heads tonight because no less than two minutes after walking out the door, Cade sauntered over with a huge shit-eating grin on his face and I just knew that he saw her. “Fletch, dude…”

“What’s up?” I could tell he wanted to talk about her, but I was also hoping that he’d read my tone and know that it wasn’t the right time.

“Tell me everything.”

“About what?”

Cade playfully smacks my arm, “Oh, don’t even pretend like you don’t know who I’m talking about. That brunette that was over here, she was hot as fuck. I saw you flirting with her. You get her number?”

“Watch your mouth, Cade.” My words may have been a bit harsher than intended, so much for keeping my emotions in check.

“Oh, you like her? You calling dibs.”

“I called dibs thirteen years ago.” Cade tilts his head as he looks at me. “That was Eden Morris.”

His jaw slacks just slightly, “Whoa, Eden as is just disappeared one day and nobody really knew what happened, Eden?”

“That’s the one.”

“Damn, she grew up.” Cade licks his lips, “You think she’s into younger guys?”

“Fuck off.”

I try to walk away, but Cade grabs my arm and turns me back around. “Calm down, tiger. I’m just messing with you. What’s she here for? It’s not high school reunion time, is it?”

“She said she just moved back, she’s living with her mom for now.”

“Well, I’ll be damned.”

“You two talking about her?” Toni practically skips over to us in excitement and I kind of want to tell them both to shove it.

“She has a name, Toni. Can we please not talk about this right now? We still have a busy bar and we do not need to be gossiping about her.”

Toni leans over the bar, not ready to give it up yet, “She’s cute, Fletch.”

“Puppies are cute. That woman is drop-dead gorgeous.” Cade looks back to me, “Did she tell you where she’s been all these years?”

“California.”

“Damn, the beach did her well,” Cade looks in the direction of the door again, even though Eden was long gone by now.

“Seriously, Cade, can you not talk about her like that? Eden’s not like one of your weekend girls.”

“What’s so special about Eden?” Toni asks.

“Fletch was in love with Eden when they were teenagers,” Cade answers for me.

“I was sixteen. Can you be in love at sixteen?”

Toni nods, “I loved Jeff Hardy when I was sixteen.”

“Jeff Hardy?” Cade and I both look at each other.

“The wrestler, he had crazy hair colors, did a nose dive off the ropes?” She waves us off and goes back to get questioning, “You know what? Forget it. Keep going about Eden.”
