FLETCHER

When I woke up I went to wrap my arm around Eden but was slightly disappointed when she wasn’t there. I glanced over to the bathroom and the door was wide open, so I was a bit confused as to where she had gone. I slipped on a pair of sweatpants and went downstairs to the living room where I heard her voice coming from. I stood behind her and listen to her on the phone with somebody. I wasn’t trying to eavesdrop, but when I heard her say Caleb’s name, I couldn’t help but stop and listen.

“I understand what you’re saying, Lawrence,” She said into the phone, “and to be honest you’ve given me some clarity on a few events that have happened lately.” I can tell the person on the other end is saying something to her, but she just listens and nods. “Yes, of course. Please send me condolences to Orion’s family through their lawyer. “

“I will make sure I have that updated, thank you.”

“You too, bye.” She hangs up the phone and slumps back onto the couch. I finish walking down the stairs. The final stair creaked a bit and she popped up and looked at me. “Hey, I didn’t hear you there.”

“Yeah, you were on the phone. Everything okay?”

“Oh yeah, that was my dad’s estate lawyer.”

I round the couch and take a seat next to her, “What was your dad’s lawyer calling you about?”

“Well oddly enough, it was about Caleb and his motives for being here.”

“Besides being a grade-A asshole?” I groan.

“Yeah, exactly.” She scoots closer to me and I wrap my arm around her, pulling her against my side. “So this is a bit complicated, but the guy who my dad left the company to is really sick with cancer, he knew he was passing away he wanted to figure out what to do with the company.”

“Wouldn’t it just get passed to the next in line at the company? Unless he has a family, I guess. I don’t really know how big businesses work.”

“I don’t think he has any family, at least nobody I ever met. And yes, it would go to the CFO as long as the board approved, but he didn’t want that to happen.”

“Why is that?”

“Because Caleb is the CFO.”

“He DIDN’T want it to go to Caleb?” I smirk,  “Well I’ll be damned.”

“I didn’t ask much, but maybe Orion saw through Caleb the same way I did.”

“So where does that leave the company? To you?”

“Oh god no,” she cackles. “Even if he wanted to I’d say no. But actually, he is selling it to an investor’s group. So instead of a single person running the company, it would be a large group, but most oversight would come from the board members currently in place.”

“So Caleb won’t get the hotel? That’s great news.”

“It is. And I think I know why he’s been around and why he was up to everything he was up to. Orion made the requirement in the contract with the investor that 10% of quarterly business is put into a trust fund account for Joey.”

“Holy shit, why did he do that?’

She shrugs, “I don’t know, but the funds will be released to Joey when he’s 21, and before that, his legal guardians have access and control of the money.”

“That douchebag,” I spit, “He was trying to get you back because of the money.”

“It had nothing to do with wanting to be with me. He must know what was happening and knew the only way to get his hand on hotel money was through Joey. I bet the board is getting rid of him from his CFO position.”
