FLETCHER
If I could have stopped time sitting on that park bench with my lips pressed against Eden’s, I would have. The kiss that we shared had nothing on the kisses we had shared that summer so many years ago. Her lips were soft and I could feel that they wanted me even more than I would give her at that moment.
I wasn’t trying to be a tease or anything, but I knew if we kept kissing and I took her the way I wanted to that we would be arrested for indecent exposure and the entire town would have seen us in a position they didn’t need to. I couldn’t wait to kiss her again though and I totally dragged my feet walking her back to her car.
I had to get to work and she was going home to spend time with her son, but damn I wish I could have spent another few hours just talking to her. Listening to her stories about rich guys at her high school that couldn’t even change a tire, the YouTube star wannabe girls that shaved their eyebrows because they heard it was a new trend and anything else about her that she would share with me.
Of course, there were burning questions that I wanted to know. How did she meet her husband? Why did they get divorced? What made things so bad that she took Joseph and uprooted them here? Was it really just starting over? I’m sure she had her reasons, but she took a son away from his father and I can’t help but wonder what must have gone on to make her do that.
I guess it would just mean that we’d have to see each other again and I’d have to earn her trust so she would tell me. I had no problem with that though. I had intentions galore with that woman and one of them was to see her again as soon as possible.
I pull my truck up to the back of the bar and see that Parker and my mom are here already. My mom, bless her heart, loves this place so much. I figured she’d want another family meeting in a couple of hours and we’d all groan, but attend. The four of us were mama boys and there was no which way about it.
“Hey, mom.” I kiss herhugs me on the cheek in passing, but she grabs my arm and stops me. I turn around to face her and she just points to the office. Like a little boy in trouble, I follow her and sit down on the chair as she closes the door behind us.
“I feel like I’m in trouble.”
“Well, you did miss brunch this morning.”
“I told you why I wasn’t going to be there, you know?”
“I know, a date with Miss Morris huh?” She raises her eyebrows.
“Eden, yes. I’m not sure if Morris is still her last name though. I guess she was married up until a little bit ago.”
My mom’s face scrunched up, “So you went on a date with a girl without knowing her name?”
“Oh, come on, Mom.”
“I’m just teasing you. I’m glad the two of you met up. How is she doing?”
“She’s good. Just trying to get used to being back here. Hey Mom, I have a question.”
“Sure, what’s up?”
“Did you know what happened between Alice and Eden’s dad?”
“I had an idea, but it wasn’t really something a lot of people talked about.”
“How is that possible? This is the capital of talking about things. The people in this town love gossip.”
“Most things, yes, but when Eden left, Alice was so heartbroken and it just wasn’t something to gossip about. It was a sad thing that happened. You know better than anybody else that Alice wasn’t the only person who lost Eden that day. So many of us were just broken-hearted that things happened so quickly and the way that they did.”
