THERE USED TO BE A SAYING, how love can change how we view our lives as a whole.

how that exact saying impacts kailee is complicated, to say the least. her mind was scattered as she stared at the shining ring on her finger, a light smile of her face as she admired it- only frowning when she realized the pain it held along with it.

there wasn't ever a medium place where she could go, where she could hide away from her problems for just a few hours. she lives with her boyfriend and his best friends, who then also bother her at all times of the day- or how her heart shatters the second she noticed daniel's facial expression walking into their shared bedroom that very night.

"hi baby, how was the studio?"

"i'm gonna shower."

there wasn't much communication between the couple, only that kailee had to tell daniel that her car had been dropped off finally after being brought from home, and that they asked each other about their days briefly.

as kailee had thought a week ago, things were wrong.

"mind if i join you?" she teased, hoping to lighten the mood as he shook his head, not saying another word before stepping into the bathroom.

instead of waiting for him to return to their bed where she was laying, she ventured over to jonah's room, knocking lightly until she heard a 'come in' from her best friend.

"i don't think daniel and i are working." she fully admitted to the boy, not sparing any time as she didn't want anyone else to enter when she had said that.

"kails, he loves you and you love him. what part do you think makes you guys not work?"

"the communication. he's not talking to me. i'm debating on moving back home or at least staying with my mom for awhile to make things better."

"kailee, he's trying."

"i understand that your work is hard, that your lives are complicated but i came back to a boyfriend who i feel doesn't love me. yes, i support you all so so much and i know that your priority in life is to make music that you're proud of and have a musical career whereas i currently sit around on my ass waiting for my boyfriend to give me the slightest amount of affection."

"kails-"

"i came back to him because he said that things would be different, that he would remind me that i am loved- but why don't i feel happy anymore? what made him so upset with me that i feel like every chance i take at kissing him or supporting him or loving him, he rips it to shreds because he's in the dumps? i used to be his person, now i think he wants a new person."

"if you feel that way you should just talk to him, kails. telling me is only helping you feel a little better for a couple days and then you'll be stuck in your head again. do you want to call it quits?"

"i never want to leave him, but why do i feel like i don't have a choice?"

there it was, the admittance of how horrible their relationship has been.

"it's just been two months since i moved here, jo. i don't feel wanted here anymore."

"YOU NEED TO TALK TO KAILEE." jonah immediately told daniel the following day, who looked at him concerned about his girlfriend.

"why? is she okay?" he sounded worried about her, which jonah took as a good sign.

"she thinks you don't want her in los angeles anymore. that maybe it's time to hang up the boots."

"you're not making any sense- her and i are completely fine."

"daniel, when was the last time you held her, and not just because you woke up and your arm was around her."

it took him a minute to truly think about it, and due to the absence of an answer, he knew it was something to fully be concerned about.

"does she still love me?"

"you practically own her whole heart to yourself, dan. i'm more concerned at how she's falling apart while you find every reason to avoid her. hell, you two almost broke up on valentine's day last week."

"she was on the verge of a breakdown, worried that i didn't ever love her- that was all because of memories and it makes sense. i just think she's overreacting."

"daniel, she's considering leaving."

AS DANIEL ARRIVED TO THEIR shared bedroom, he was quickly searching for her, and then he saw it.

"this ring is a promise to love you forever and to make you one of my top priorities in my life. i don't want to get married now, but long term, i want to. which is why- for now - i want you to wear this promise ring. because it'll show the world that i love you inside and out."

the ring was sitting on the dresser.

"kailee? where are you?" the weather was storming outside, dark clouds glooming over them as the power turned off, everything darkening in the space around them, both eager to find one another.

"kailee? where are you?"

only this time, she did answer by having his shower water running, her not wanting to damage the ring in the water, thus why it was on the dresser.

"baby?" he called out once more, hoping to hear something from her.

poking his head into the bathroom, he smiled as he saw his beautiful girlfriend on full display, him adoring every inch of her.

quietly undressing himself, he slipped into the shower behind her, slowly wrapping his arms around her waist, startling the girl.

"daniel!" she squealed, turning around as she remained in his arms, fully aware of their close proximity.

"please stop doubting my love for you. i cannot tell you enough times during the day that you are my person. you are the one person i want to wake up to in the morning, that i can fall asleep with even during an argument because i know that sometime we would fix it, because i put every inch of my love for you in every second i spend it with you. i have loved you for over six years and i don't plan on leaving you, and i'm sorry that i did this, that i was being such an awful boyfriend to you when i truly want you to be happy. i caused you pain when i promised to never cause it again."

"daniel." she smiled softly, her wet hands running through his hair gently, soothing his nerves. "i love you. and i was wondering that if we are going to be together forever, will we ever get married?"

"i plan on marrying you the second i put a different ring on your finger."

"another ring on my finger, not swapping them out because that promise ring is a forever ring too."

daniel couldn't help but sigh in relief, admiring his girlfriend's beauty before leaning in and kissing her, letting the water finally soak them both.

"now that we've cleared that up, would you like to dry off and join me in bed?"
