THERE'S NOTHING MORE heart wrenching than having to witness your two best friends get married. sure, there a girl on your arm, praying for that to be you both on the alter one day- but it hadn't compared to the pain in his eyes.
when asked if anyone had any objections, he fought with himself before he remained seated, her glancing towards him, sending him a small smile.
once the vows we spoken, they were exiting the main room, entering the reception area.
the wedding was in its own whirlwind of emotions, capturing them in a moment in time where nothing else mattered.
"kailee, talk to me, please." daniel pleaded, his hands taking her own shaking ones, tears streaming down her perfect features as she gave a light-hearted laugh, stress relishing on her face. "i need to know if you'll love me back."
"daniel, i'm married to your best friend." she began, struggling with the proper wording. "but right now, even when i was on the alter, all i could think about was him. how happy i've been for the years i've known him through you, and through my years without you. i cannot love you anymore, daniel. i do not love you anymore." that was never the truth, was it?
daniel's heart broken at the slight words, only hating how he was ruining his best friend's relationship on a day that was supposed to be his happiest. he wished it was any other guy than corbyn, but he couldn't help who he loved.
"do you love him?" corbyn practically whimpered out, pressing for the answer.
she shook her head, staring at the boy who she reached out to, her husband.
"i love you, corbyn matthew besson. i want to carry your children, i want to make love till the end of time. i want to take my last dying breathe with you. i want my life with you. i can't get that with him, nor do i want it with him."
as she spoke, the way her heart began to pound in her chest, thinking of all the possibilities that were endless the second they left this church, removed her from where she currently resides in, talked to everyone about the situation, talked everything through. daniel noticed, he always noticed the way her heart beated faster around him, knowing how she felt just by looking in her eyes.
instead of bothering the couple any further, he stepped up in time for his song to be performed, in honour of the newest couple to be added into the why don't we marriages catalogue.
"there's a house by the beach, with a dog in the sheets- where the sun always shines. there's a ring on your hand and i'm still in the band, and i hold you every night." daniel continued the song, his voice not faltering but anyone who was close with the boy realized the change.
it was kailee who noticed, her eyes softening as she recognized the song, one of his first singles as a singles artist. he had released it about a month after her and corbyn had gotten engaged, which had been eighteen months ago. and before then? it was a couple of years of happiness. kailee getting her dream job and working alongside her newly-announced husband on his music, their ideas blending together as his new projects progressed.
the song was i tried, by daniel seavey himself. it was beautiful, the rest of the guests loved it, but she knew corbyn was waiting for her reaction, waiting for her to decide to run off with the boy her heart first loved.
daniel never came back to her, never fought against corbyn and the other boys when they stopped him from seeing her.
his heart still was hers. hers was still his. he didn't come back from her though, leaving her to find her next love story.
he grew old, he did find another love, but his first try at love was a success in a way, as he knew he tried his best in the little time they had been together compared to the lifetime they had with their partners.
but did kailee not love him? did kailee ever regret her decision?
did her and corbyn stay together till death due them apart? did they not make it until the end of their times? what was the breaking point for the couple?
made a promise i could never keep, but i swear to god i tried.
