C H A P T E R F I V E || PANIC CORD

“Jesus, Anna, you’ve only been here for two days and you’ve already broken your ankle.” Derek groaned as he drove me home from the emergency room. I winced as I shifted my leg and looked at the dipshit who sat next to me. No doubt how good he looked, no doubt how much I wanted to strangle him. He still wore his work clothes, looking like an adult, and I currently wore a pair of his shorts with no underwear, and a t-shirt. Not only was I crabby because I broke my ankle, I was not even dressed properly. Now there’s an ugly boot on my foot, my body looks awful, and I didn’t get to put in my contacts.
“I’m sorry; I didn’t mean to fall in the bathroom!” I snapped. My pain medication was starting to wear off and Derek couldn’t drive any faster to Walgreens.
“Do you know how to walk?” He snapped.
“I do! Do you know how to put your shit away! I tripped over towels in the bathroom!”
“I was running late this morning!”
“It doesn’t take long to shove a towel in the hamper!” I yelled back at him. Derek rubbed his forehead as we sat in a red light, probably wondering how to kill me. Not that I could disagree with him, I wanted to kill him too. We sat in silence for a moment before Derek sped towards Walgreens.
There’s many things he’s not happy about. Our marriage and living situation had already been a constant irritation to the both of us, but tonight he’s probably over edge. When he came home, I had been propped in the bathroom trying to reach my cell phone to call someone, but it hurt too bad to walk. That left me sitting in my towel on the bathroom floor when Derek found me.
Then, he had to help me get dressed, bottom wise. It shouldn’t be a big deal to both of us, considering we’ve already slept together, but I didn’t want him to see any part of my body. So that left us arguing for about twenty more minutes until he hauled me into his car and drove me to the emergency room.
At the emergency room, is where he started to snap. Being with Derek for almost a week, I learned that he doesn’t have patience with certain situations, and mine right now is one of them. They took too long to take me back, causing him to start snapping on the nurses. When it came time to filling out paperwork, we struggled when it came to insurance and personal information. All in all, tonight seemed to be a disaster, and Derek isn’t happy.
I think the only good part was the nurse hitting on him all night. She flirted with him and tried focusing the attention on her breasts, but Derek didn’t even pay attention, which surprised me. Instead, he completely ignored the chick and yelled about me being helped. Honestly, it melted my heart a little.
When we got to the drive-thru, Derek tapped his hands against the steering wheel in annoyance. I tried to think of something to say, but I didn’t know what to say, so we sat in silence.
“Prescription for Thomas, Anna.” Derek said as he made it through the window. He read off the phone number, and looked at us curiously.
“Sir, I have one for Anna Jones with that phone number.” Derek pressed his lips into a fine line and nodded his head weakly.
“Yeah, that’s right.” He sighed. I stared at the floor of his car, hoping that this misery would end. I wanted nothing more than the floor to swallow me up and I knew Derek felt the same way.
