C H A P T E R N I N E || THE MORE BOYS I MEET, THE MORE I LOVE MY DOG

“Mr. and Mrs. Jones, your father should be here any moment.” Derek huffed at the waiter’s comment and browsed through the menu. I sat awkwardly looking at all the rich people around me. Derek’s father called us to reschedule dinner, and although I hoped he’d just cook something at his house like any normal person, we had to go out to a fancy restaurant where I didn’t know the type of fork to use. Derek seemed uncomfortable as he kept playing with the collar of his dress shirt. I wanted to tape his hands down to the table, but I was no better.
Unfortunately, I’m still in the boot, so that left me in a nice black dress that fell above the knee, and this ugly boot. I tied my giant hair into a bun and managed to hide my chest-something I realized Derek enjoys looking at. Every day we seemed less as the couple that wanted to get divorced, and more as one that’s been married for years.
“I don’t know what I should get.” I whispered. Derek looked over at me, pressing his lips in a fine line.
“Whatever you like.” He exhaled. I furrowed my eyebrows and continued skimming over the foreign menu.
“No one here is getting food I like.” I whispered. Derek turned around and glanced at the women in the restaurant. Dressed in expensive dresses, they ate light salads and skinny things of meat-something I could never do.
“You’re going to get a salad due to peer pressure?” He asked stupidly.
“If I get something else, I look fat, but if I get a salad, I look like the fatass trying to be skinny.” Derek blinked slowly at me and took a deep breath before speaking to me.
“Anna, order whatever the hell you want.”
“It’s not like you’ll complain if I decide to eat lighter.” Derek’s eyes widened and he looked at me in frustration.
“What are you talking about?” He cried.
“You think I don’t know about the comments you made before?” I quipped. “How you judge some of my eating habits?”
“Anna, I think you’re crazy.” He grumbled.
“I think I’m being realistic, actually.”
“Just order what you want! What’s the big deal? Who cares what you’re eating?”
“It matters because I don’t want to be judged or made fun of! I never do the right thing to get out of the teasing so I would appreciate if you could help for once.” Derek’s eyes widened at my rant and looked down at his plate. An emotion passed through his eyes but he masked it before I could see.
“Just get what you want.” He whispered.
“You’re no help.” I scoffed.
“You know, why don’t you just stab me with this fork? That would help me a lot.”
“You don’t think I’ve already thought of that? I just tried counting my years in prison.” I huffed. Derek closed his eyes and sighed before looking down at his menu. We didn’t speak until his father came into the restaurant. He gave Derek and I hugs as if we were close and sat down.
“Sorry I’m late, a woman is suing her boss-anyway, and how are you two?” Derek sighed and took a sip of his water.
“We’re fine, I guess.” His father nodded and looked at me curiously.
“Anna, how are you? You look like you’re going to kill someone.” He chuckled. I plastered a smile on my face and tried to think of happy thoughts.
