“Andy, I’m so happy you finally came to see me!” My mother cooed, engulfing Andy in a large hug. The poor kid stood there awkwardly, trying to breathe in my mother’s bear hug. I grimaced at the two of them and looked over at Derek who smiled brightly. Derek’s hands were shoved in his pockets awkwardly, unsure of what he should do in my mother’s presence. He’s never told me how he knows my mother and I’ve been too chicken to ask. I could ask my mother, but I have a feeling she would make me go to Derek due to it being about his mother.
“Hi, Anna’s mom.” Andy mumbled bashfully as he pulled away from my mother. He looked up at Derek and I as if he was unsure of what to say and I couldn’t help but laugh at him.
“Mom, you’re scaring him.” My mom swatted me on the arm and gave me a dirty look.
“It’s always nice to see you.” She huffed.
“Derek, how are you?” She smiled, engulfing Derek into her bear hug. He seemed tense and slightly shy as he hugged her, as if he didn’t know how he should behave around her.
“I’m great.”
“Really?” She asked, raising her eyebrow at him.
“Getting there,” He shrugged.
“I only like honesty, Derek. You can’t sugar coat that stuff to me.” Rolling my eyes, I glanced around the house seeing if she ever changed anything. It looked the same from every time I’ve lived there.
“All right, so I’ve managed to make quite the dinner so I hope you’re hungry. Andy, I have a surprise for you. In Anna’s old room is a gift for you, why don’t you get that before we eat?” His face lit up like the Fourth of July and looked at Derek.
“Can I?”
“Yes you can.” He smiled.
“Where is it?” Andy asked bashfully.
“It’s in Anna’s room, all you have to do is look for the most boring room.” Derek smirked at me and Andy looked at her in confusion.
“It’s a grey room with a grey bed.” He nodded his head and began his search down the hall, looking for my old bedroom. I swatted my mother on the arm and looked at her in irritation.
“Mom,” She only grinned at me, proving that she’s crazy.
“Stop being so serious.” She laughed. “Derek, did you want a beer?”
“No thank you, I’m driving tonight.”
“Smart.” She beamed. I rolled my eyes and looked at the both of them.
“You two are annoying.” I huffed, planting myself down at the table. I could feel my stomach grumble at the large amount of food she had placed on the table. She made homemade raviolis and numerous side dishes. There was a salad bowl on the counter, some veggies, fruit, and home made macaroni for Andy.
“Wow, you went all out.” I admired, feeling my mouth water. Derek shook his head and sat down next to me.
“I swear, you’re always hungry.” He chuckled, kissing my cheek. I swatted him away and looked at the food.
“Mom, are you feeding an army?”
“Well, there’s a child now, I figured I would feed him well.” She said proudly.
