Chapter 9: Hunted

Hunted

I narrowed my eyes at the snarling wolf and kicked out. My foot connected with its scared up jaw and the Shape Shifter flew back with the blow. I ran toward it and lashed out.

I punched it in the side and kicked it again in the side of its head. With a low growl the thing tried to bite me. I leaped away from it just as I heard a spell being casted. I turned my head just in time to see Natsu cup his mouth with both hands.

"Fire Dragon's Roar!"

To my amazement, orange flames shot out of his mouth, and into his cupped hands.

The flames flew out of his hands and went straight for the wolf. His flames slammed into it, and with a yelp, the wolf was sent flying through the wall. Dust rose up and as I watched, I saw movement. A shadow rose up from the thick cloud of dust.

Its eyes were glowing red.

"Natsu." I said in warning as I began to walk slowly back to him. The wolf leaped out of the dust with its fangs bared. My eyes widened. The damn thing had grown taller. It was now taller than me. I cursed and spun around. I couldn't beat this thing without my daggers!

My eyes landed on Natsu.

I couldn't draw my daggers in front of him. I ran to Natsu and grabbed his hand. Before we could get out the wolf lunged. I struck out with my foot but the wolf dodged the blow.

The Shape Shifter raised its tail and brought it down in a arch. The things tail hit me in the chest and I flew back. I landed on my back hard and I heard Natsu say my name. I couldn't answer him back. I was still trying to get my breath back. I sat up and winced.

Oh, how I wanted to stick my daggers into its furry head. I struggled to get up as the wolf went for me again. Before the thing reached me Natsu was suddenly standing in front of me. As I watched Natsu's body went up in flames.

When the wolf was in striking distance Natsu struck out with his flaming fist. His fist hit the wolf in the head and the wolf yelped. The wolf took a step back and it eyed us with its blood red eyes. It was thinking of its next move.

This Shape Shifter...it was smart.

Natsu and the wolf seemed to have a stare down. Neither one of them moved. This was the first time I had ever seen Natsu like this. The goofy and care free boy that I knew was gone. In that boys place was this quiet and calculating boy.

Suddenly Natsu attacked with a angry shout. The wolf snarled and leaped. They both clashed together and Natsu was a blur of motion and flames.

I saw him kick out with his foot which was aflame. The wolf dodged and went for Natsu's leg. Natsu did a back flip to avoid the wolf's snapping jaws.

I got up and I leaned a hand on the wall for support. I had to help him. I took a staggering step forward when Natsu suddenly shouted at me. "Don't come near, Frey!" I gave him a shocked look. "What?! I want to help you!" I shouted to him.

The wolf made a move to tear Natsu's head off but Natsu punched the wolf under its jaw. "Your hurt!" Natsu yelled back as he blocked the wolfs gleaming fangs. I shook my head and gritted my teeth. He was wrong. I wasn't hurt!

I took a breath and ran forward. With a growl I kicked the wolf in its chest. It took a staggering step back. I took my place beside Natsu. "I'm not hurt." I told him. Natsu glanced at me and smiled. "Whatever you say."

I smirked, reached up and flicked his forehead. "That's right. Whatever I say goes!" Natsu laughed just as the Shape Shifter took a step toward us. "Ready?"
I nodded.

Natsu and I launched ourselves at the wolf. The wolf rose up on its back paws and slashed its claws down. I barely dodged. Natsu, however, didn't have enough time to get out of the way.

The wolf's claws raked down his side. He took a step back and grimaced. "Natsu!" I shouted as I ran over to him.

The wolf wouldn't let me though.

It leaped in front of me and lashed out with its fangs. I kicked off the ground and did a spinning kick in the air. My foot slammed into the wolf's black head. With a howl it jumped away. I hurried over to Natsu and my eyes widened when I saw that his side was bleeding heavily.

I glanced over my shoulder at the wolf. It was shaking its head back and forth as if to clear it.

I didn't waste any time.

I had to get Natsu out of here.

I grabbed his hand and we ran out of the house as the wolf let out a howl of anger. I didn't look back as Natsu and I ran. We rounded a corner and I spotted an open door.

I ran for it.

With Natsu on my heels we ran into the house. I slammed the door shut and locked it. If the wolf did come, that door wouldn't stop it, but it would slow it down.

I turned to Natsu. I didn't have much time. "Natsu, I need you to stay here, okay?" He narrowed his eyes at me as he held his side. "No! Are you crazy? I want to fight that thing!" I ran my hand through my hair and glanced out the window.

How was I going to protect him and defeat this thing without showing my true power? "I also can't let you fight that bastard alone." I looked over at him and he was smiling at me.

I blinked. "Why not?" Now it was his turn to blink at me. "Cause, I don't want you to get hurt. Everyone in Fairy Tail is considered family. We don't let family fight alone." I let out a breath.

He cared if I got hurt?

I opened my mouth to say something when a howl rose up. I ducked and so did Natsu. I crawled to the window and looked out. The wolf was there and his head was raised to the sky in a howl. I narrowed my eyes at it.

Natsu and I were being hunted.
