"Some of God's greatest gifts are unanswered prayers"

-Unanswered Prayers-

Garth Brooks

POV: Y/N

'Just the other night at a hometown football game... My wife and I ran into my old high school flame... And as I introduced them the past came back to me... And I couldn't help but think of the way things used to be...'

I sat in the bleachers with my wife at my side as the soccer game began. We were there to watch my niece play her final game of the season. I caught sight of someone that I hadn't seen in years. I got lost in the memories for a few seconds, before my wife's voice cut through them.

"Y/N?"

"Yes, love?" I answered, before the woman I had been looking at caught sight of me. She stood and started to come over.

"Y/N Y/LN?" The woman said, coming to stand next to us.

"Ashleigh Smithe." I answered back, knowing exactly who it was. "It's been a long time."

"That it has." Ashleigh smiled, offering me her hand. I stood and shook it. "It's good to see you, you look great."

I nodded in thanks, turning to my wife. "Darling, this is Ashleigh Smithe, we dated in high school. Ashleigh, this is my wife, Alex Morgan."

"Wait, The Alex Morgan?" Ashleigh's eyes went wide. "The Orlando Pride Forward?"

Alex blushed softly. It wasn't often that she was referred to by her club, rather than the National Team position. Alex stood and offered Ashleigh her hand. "Yeah. Nice to meet you."

"Likewise." Ashleigh shook her hand and looked towards the field. "So are you here for your kid?"

"Our niece, my older sibling's kid. She's a junior, number 13, just like her aunt."

"Kayleigh?" Ashleigh asked, looking back at me.

"Yeah."

She made a sound that I couldn't quite understand, but I ignored it, spotting my niece with the ball, making a break for the opposing goal. She kicked hard, hitting the upper corner of the goal, just out of the goalie's reach.

"YES!"

"I taught her that." Alex laughed softly, clapping.

"GOAL HOME TEAM - number 13 Kayleigh Y/LN. Unassisted" the announcer spoke up as another cheer went through the crowd.

'She wasn't quite the angel that I remembered in my dreams... And I could tell that time had changed me... In her eyes too it seemed... We tried to talk about the old days... There wasn't much we could recall...'

Ashleigh tried to strike up a conversation about things that had happened back when we were kids, memories that had long since faded to make room for memories involving Alex. I tried, I really did, to remember half of what she was talking about, but I was coming up short. Alex, sensing my frustration, pressed a kiss to my cheek as half time was indicated.

"Baby?" Alex spoke up, getting my attention.

"Yes darling?" I asked.

"Do you want to run and grab some water and maybe a pretzel or something from the snack bar? I know we are going to dinner after the game, but I'm getting kinda snack-y." Alex smirked at me, giving me an excuse to leave the conversation. God I love this woman.

"Sure. Do you want mustard on the pretzel or do you want a cinnamon one?" I asked.

"Surprise me. I'll keep Ms. Smithe entertained while you are gone." she offered, pulling me into a kiss. She leaned away slightly, whispering in my ear. "You seemed like you needed to escape for a few seconds."

"You are a goddess on earth, never let me tell you differently."

With that I stood up straight and headed down the bleachers, getting a few hellos and heys along the way. I spotted one of my old friends on the way towards the snack bar and managed to have a quick conversion with them as we waited in line. Jericho and I had met in primary school and had been friends for years, only losing contact once we hit college. We had reconnected when my niece and his daughter met for soccer just three years earlier.

"So where's Alex?" Jericho asked,

"Currently dealing with my ex... who decided to approach us and make conversation."

"Wait... Smithe is here?" He asked, looking towards the stands. He could spot my wife easily, and sitting next to her was Ashleigh. "Are you sure it's a good idea to leave the two of them alone?"

"Alex can handle herself. She's a professional athlete, pretty sure some of her teammates hit harder than Ashleigh could."

By the time I answered, we had gotten to the front and ordered our various snacks, which were quickly handed back to us. I made my way back to the stands, separating from Jericho at the steps. He was off to sit with his wife, to watch their daughter, one of Kayleigh's best friends.

As I got back to my seat, Ashleigh had begun to stand. Alex looked rather smug about it.

"It was nice seeing you again, Y/N." Ashleigh said, quickly going down the bleacher stairs and disappearing into the crowd.

As she walked away, I looked at my wife, and then and there I thanked the lord for the gifts in my life. Never had I been more thankful for Unanswered Prayers than at that moment.
