March 2019
POV: Y/N
My plane landed in Orlando and I sighed. My wife was back in Seattle. She would be there for the send off games, but we still had a camp beforehand. It didn't take long for me to get to the hotel and be face to face with the coach I had last seen just after the 2016 Olympics.
"Coach." I said, offering her my hand.
"Y/N. It's good to see you again." Jill said, calling me by my first name. It was something we agreed on in a follow up phone call in the last few weeks. "How was your flight?"
"Uneventful. I thought I spotted a few other players, but I seem to have arrived alone."
Before she could answer, the door opened and several players entered. It seems I had been correct that other players had been on my flight.
"Ladies... welcome in. Dawn has your room assignments." Jill said, over my shoulder. The women didn't say anything to Jill, only moving towards Dawn a bit away.
"I wonder how long it will take before someone realizes who I am..." I laughed softly, pulling my hood a bit tighter around my head.
"So your first day gear has your maiden name on it. But we have your game day gear ready to go. You just have to earn your spot and choose your number." Jill informed, motioning towards Dawn.
"Y/N." Dawn said as we got close. She pulled me into a hug and smiled. "Congrats on... everything." She lightly tapped my ring finger.
"Thank you Dawn and Hope says hi." I whispered softly, taking my key.
"You are rooming with Alex, is that ok?" Dawn explained.
"Yeah that's fine. Is she here yet or do I have time to ease into being back in camp?" I asked.
"She'll be here in a few hours. She's wrapping things up with Pride." Jill answered quickly, before wrapping her arm around my shoulders. "I'm sure there are some players who would love to see you again."
In my head I answered that there was one specific person that I am sure would hate to find out she was about to play with me again.
I headed towards my room, up on the 5th floor. As the door to the elevator opened, I came face to face with Julie Ertz.
"Y/N?" JJ looked utterly confused.
"Hey, JJ..." I stepped out of the elevator and smiled. "How are you?"
"I'm fine... slightly confused at the moment, but fine. What are you doing here?"
"I got called up." I answered simply, not bothering to specify that I was called up as a goalie.
"I didn't know we were missing a defender." JJ pulled me into a hug. "It's gonna be great playing with you again."
I hugged back, smiling. "Do you want to come talk in my room? I'm not really... ready... to see the rest of the team before the team meeting this evening."
She nodded and followed me into my room. We talked for quite a while before her phone chimed.
"Oh. Pinoe and some of the others are looking for me. They also know someone newish was called up, but no one knows who."
"Yeah. I imagine that since the roster hasn't dropped yet, no one knows who is who and I'm sure I am not the only 'new' player." I answered. I bit my lip, arguing with myself on whether I should tell her that I got married. My thoughts were interrupted however, when she finally caught sight of my wedding ring.
"You got married?"
"I did. A couple months ago. Best day of my life." I smiled brightly at the memories.
