~*~Author's Notes~*~ Hey ya'll! I know, ya'll are probably pissed and dying to know who Mr. Rain is and who the guy they are after is! Well! You my dear friends and readers, shall have to await Bruce and Adeen's wedding. >:) I know I'm evil that way. The title is actually a song from the TV show Nashville called "No One Will Ever Love You" by Connie Britton and Charles Esten. I love this song with a burning passion (I'm in a hyperbole mood at the moment! xD) and it fits Bruce and Adeen so beautifully. I will put video of it on this chapter so ya'll can listen to it! :) So without further adieu, Chapter 18. P.S. Please don't kill me, but the wedding won't be for a while... Few chapters away...
“So he was there for sure?” Fury asked, sitting behind his desk.
He had his arms folded across his chest, leaning back in his chair. He looked up at the four Avengers with his one eye. Adeen nodded slowly standing in front of Fury’s desk. Her head was hanging low with her arms folded across her chest. Bruce, Steve, and Tony stood behind her remaining silent as they watched their mission leader being interrogated. They could only imagine how Adeen was feeling at the moment, failing the mission. Their mission was to find out who this guy was and bring him in for questioning on the robbery of top-secret SHIELD files. Now the guy could be anywhere in the United States or around the world by now and they had no clue where he was. Adeen took a deep breath before she spoke.
“Yes, sir…we’re sure…he was there most definitely…” Adeen answered him quietly.
Fury nodded and stayed quiet for a few moments. He then looked back up at Adeen.
“Anything else happen that I should be concerned about?”
“Yeah, actually there is. Ex Agent Rain Morgan is back, if ya didn’t know… unless you are keeping things from me again…”
Her expression on her face stayed its same stoic expression as she raised her head to look him in the face. An icy war raged in her blue eyes as she glared down at him. She turned around before Fury could say anything and shoved past the guys. Fury quickly stood up and was about to say something when she walked out of the door and disappeared into the hall. He sighed and sat back down. Steve, Bruce, and Tony looked at each other and turned their heads over their shoulders and watched her leave. They walked out of the office and followed after Adeen, knowing something was up. If this guy bothered Adeen, then he was bad news and there was something no one was telling them. Adeen walked down the hallway with her hands in her jacket pockets staring down at the floor. Many thoughts were going through her head as memories she had long since forgotten flooded through her mind. She wanted to forget about all the happy memories she shared with that bastard. She wanted to forget about him forever.
“Adeen, hold up!” Steve called from behind her.
Adeen sighed heavily knowing exactly what they were about to say and stopped dead in her tracks. She stayed facing forward, not wanting to look anyone in the eyes at the moment. She didn’t want anyone finding out anything about her past with him. Adeen would have rather kept that confidential. It pissed her off just thinking about what the ass hole did to her and her judgment of others. He was the reason why she didn’t trust too many people. He was the reason why she was so alert all the time. He was the one who taught her to always look for a liar when you see one.
“If you’re gonna ask who the guy is, it ain’t none of ya’lls business.” She told them as she turned around, sending off an annoyed look.
“It kind of is our business if the guy bothers you.” Tony told her.
“You never act like that, Aid…” Bruce proclaimed in his usual quiet tone.
Adeen sighed and ran a hand through her curls and looked up at the ceiling. She needed to somehow stretch the truth so they wouldn’t find out the real truth. She looked back at them and smiled a little.
“Guys, I used to work with him and he no longer works here so please don’t worry about it. I wasn’t bothered by this guy’s sudden appearance.”
“Well from the looks of things, you make it seem like you and this Rain character had a thing going on years ago.” Steve told her truthfully with his arms folded across his chest.
“So what if we did?” Adeen finally snapped, giving him a cold look. “I don’t have to tell you about my past failed relationships or any of my relationships in general, so back the Hell off all right?”
“All right, all right, relax, Adeen…I wasn’t trying to upset you or anything…” Steve told her softly.
She sighed and her expression softened. Adeen looked down at the floor.
“I’m sorry guys…I’m just tired and don’t feel so great after letting the guy get away…I’m really sorry…”
“You don’t have to be sorry, sweetheart…we understand completely…” Tony assured her as nicely as possible. “We just want to make sure you are all right…if this guy is bothering you, we just want to know so we can help you.”
Tony knew it wise to be nice to her at times when she was under a great amount of stress. He could also see it in her eyes. She had that exhausted look with too many stories running through them at the same time. The last time she got upset when she was stressed out ended up almost a catastrophe, but she was much more stable and in control with her emotions than ever before. Still, it was always good to be cautious about these things. Adeen softly smiled at Tony, her eyes telling a totally different story as she spoke.
“Thanks, Tony…I really appreciate that…it’s just some things are better left unsaid…especially in this case…all right guys…?”
“All right, we’ll respect your wishes…just remember we are here for you if you want to talk.” Steve told her caringly.
“Thank you, guys…”
“Well, I’m going to bed…I’ll see ya guys in the morning.” Steve stated.
He walked down the hallway to his room. Tony began walking down the hallway towards the elevator.
“I’m going to the lab. Night, guys.”
“Good night.” Bruce and Adeen both told him before walking down the hall hand in hand.
When they got in front of their room door, Adeen turned around towards Bruce and kissed him softly on the lips, pulling away slowly after a few moments. She looked up at him. Bruce smiled lightly pulling a strand of her hair behind her ear.
“What’s wrong…?” Bruce asked softly, knowing this whole thing was still bothering her.
“You know I love you no matter what happens right…?” she quietly asked him, not looking away from him for a moment.
“Of course I do…and I’ll love you no matter what happens also…” Bruce assured her with a cute half smile.
Adeen couldn’t help but smile at him. She knew every word he said was true. She embraced him in a hug wrapping her arms around him, laying her head on his chest. He wrapped his arms around her and held her close to him, resting his head on top of hers. A soft smile lit up on her face. Bruce was the only one who could make her forget about Rain. He was the only one who could make her the happiest person in the entire world. He was everything to her and she didn’t want to lose him. No one would ever love him like she did.
