Shattered eyes are a curious thing among countryhumans, no one knows how or why it happens or what purpose it serves. Shattered eyes are the name given to the mysterious change in color of a country's eyes when they become depressed, or when their spirit is broken as it has been dubbed. A depressed country's eyes will turn a deep, dull gray, not silver like blind or naturally gray eyes, more like storm clouds, and entity eyes can turn gray as well but blind eyes will not become darker.
Since such little is known about how shattered eyes come to be it is hard to conduct proper research, though there are some things to conclude through observation. There are several different forms and stages of depression, shattered eyes occur to symbolize that the country has truly hit rock bottom. A shattered country will find it difficult to feel any sort of emotion and won't engage in activities or with their peers, sort of switching to autopilot if you will. It is not uncommon for a country to refuse to eat or drink and there have been cases of a shattered country starving themselves to near death and needing to be hospitalized. Suicidal thoughts and actions have not been currently observed but there are reports from older countries of these occurring in younger countries.
The exact cause of shattered eyes is unknown but it usually occurs after a traumatic event, mostly including the death of someone or the near-death of the country, whether it be accidental or deliberate. It has been observed that if a younger country goes through a lot of stress it can cause shattered eyes, as they often don't know what is going on or what to do to handle said stress.
