Hope's POV
"What! That's insane! I may not be the smartest fish in the sea, but I know for a fact that Adam and David wouldn't have been able to survive without the basic necessities to live, like... I don't know... WATER!" I yell. I look carefully at Officer Marcus' chiseled face. He look frustrated with me, but this couldn't be happening. Two weeks is far to long for someone to be missing, and then actually be alive. Marcus ran his hands through his dark, messy hair, and his blue eyes jabbed into mine.
"Of course you guys aren't gonna believe it until we have them, but you have to have faith. What happened wa-" Marcus began.
"I know the the police department is looking like fools nowadays, but you're sinking really low right now!" Izzy sliced back. She didnt look happy, but I knew she was doing excatly what I was doing right now. Trying not to show that there was still a sparkle, a glimmer of hope in our forest of despair, that maybe we could be happy, and see our friends again. But if we showed that sparkle off, and found out that they were dead, the sparkle would ignite a flame, that would lead to an explosion. We would be let down. So we had to belive that what they were saying was wrong. It had to be wrong.
Marcus sighed. I wondered how much he had to do this. Tell people news, that may make or break their day. Maybe even lives. His face looked like he had to do it often, and he wasn't fond of it. He was the second officer that began asking me questions on the night of Cate's death. He was very pressing, and acted like this effected his life. Like he would die if he didn't get some answers. In my opinion, he was very rude.
"This is real. I'll tell you everything from my side. Look, on the night they went missing... that explosion in the mine. We wanted to just call it a death. We though, after your friends never returned, that they were dead. It made perfect sense. That mine hasn't been used in years, and it's clearly not safe! Why were your friends going in there?" He questioned, with a raised eyebrow.
"Oh, great. So this is just another interragation. WE'VE TOLD YOU EVERYTHING!" Izzy freaked. Something was going on with her. Marcus gave her a sly smile, and turned around to face me. His eyes glittered with curiousity, and he pulled out a brown notepad that looked over-used. He also got out a pen, that was blue, and had the words "Elmsville Police Department" written in small gold letters on the side. He lifted it to his mouth, and pressed it to his lips. I remembered those objects. He swiftly wrote down everything I said to him on that night, using that.
"Please sit down... we're gonna be here a while" He said, with another one of those familar sly smiles, that sent shivers on a race down my spine. What was with all that creepiness anyways?
Izzy and I turned around and sat on very comfortable red chairs. After Marcus told us he thought Adam and David were alive, he brought us into a small room in the office. It smelt like eggs and had a weird fruity stench. There were papers on the ground, and pencils everywhere you looked. It was as if a tornado came into Elmsville, but only decided to hit this one room. It was painted brown- which was totally hideous. Marcus now sat across from us, at a wooden desk, that was the only clean part of the room. I tried to conjure up what teachers used for this room, but I couldn't find an answer.
When Izzy said that we told the police everything... well, that was a lie. We hadn't told them about 236, or Stella. We just told them we were tired of the carnival, so we went into the forest. We played a game of truth or dare, and I said that Izzy dared them to race to the street- a far away area, where the forest stops and meets up with civilization- and they never came back. Then, Cate poped up and chased us. I was panicking, so that's the best story I could come up with. Izzy probably would of come up with a better one, but she was shipped off to the hospital.
