Hope's POV
"Okay, so maybe if you put an adjective there, that could make the scene a little easier to picture" Kathryn said. I had decided, ever since I got that F, to get myself a tutor. Also, stop cheating on tests. Never once have I cheated since that Emma situation. She was the one who cheated! Getting perfect, even though she had the exact same F-worthy answers as me! How does that even happen? God, I hated her! How she always tried to be more popular than me at David and I's old school. Hated it. So, I needed to smarten up. That's why I'm here, at my house with Kathryn Waterman, the smartest kid in my grade. She was small, with brown hair and a face you would barely ever see because her nose was always in a book. Recently she had hung up posters all over the school, stating that she was tutoring, if anyone wanted her help. Of course it cost money, and if you ask me was pretty pricey for some learning time. But I could easily afford it.
"Yeah" I respond. I totally blanked out, and didn't acknowledge what she just suggested. I sighed, bored, and brought out my blackberry below the table so she wouldn't see. I notice I have quite a few messages, but all from one person.
Josh Noseworthy: Hope, please. I broke up with Izzy, and we weren't even technically together.
Hope Diamond: Josh, stop. Our kiss was a one time thing.
Josh Noseworthy: But I like u. A lot.
Hope Diamond: Idk how I feel...
Josh Noseworthy: Once chance. Give me one shot.
Hope Diamond: Bye Josh. TTYL
Josh Noseworthy: Hope...
And that was the end of it.
"Can you spell desperate" Kathryn asked. I looked at my phone and laughed.
"I know right! Josh is just-" I stop myself and look up. Kathryn is sitting there, confused. She honestly wants to know if I can spell desperate.
"Why are you talking about Josh? You spelled desperate wrong on your short story, and I was wondering If you knew how to correct it..." She says awkwardly. I blush.
"Oh, haha. Yeah, I know how to spell it. Totally" I dig into the depths of my brain, channeling the answer. My cheeks turn red. This is embarrassing. No more thinking, I should just go for it. "Um- Uh I know! D-E-S-P-E-R-I-T-E" I say. The minute I finished, I knew it was incorrect.
"Sorry, not quite. Switch the I for an A"
"Okay. Sorry, I knew that, must have forgotten"
"You seem distracted" Kathryn says, sincerely intrigued.
"Well yeah... Um, it's nothing" I shrug. Kathryn looks like she wants to say more, but my mom enters the room with two glasses of water.
"Hey kids" She says in an overly cheery voice, trying to play the role of sunshine. She totally didn't agree with me when I said I wanted a tutor. She still sees me as that perfect A+ student I used to be, even though since I stopped cheating, my grades have gone down. But she still believed in me. Probably because I didn't show her that F yet. And I wasn't sure I would ever. "Want some water" She handed me and Kathryn a glass full.
"Thanks Ms. Diamond" Kathryn says. My mom nods, and then exits. Kathryn takes her glasses of her face, and wipes them down to clean them, then puts them back on. "Okay, we should get back to work"
"Do you tutor anyone else" I ask. I'm bored of working, so if I can just talk to Kathryn tell the sessions over, I won't have to do any work.
"Yup. A few others"
