Can I Make You Happy?

Can I make you happy?

If happiness for you is
Living without fancy cars or giant homes,
Sleeping under the stars to watch them roam,
Singing in the rain as it soaks our clothes,
Dancing to music we barely know,
Or holding each other intimately close,
Then, I might be able to make you happy.

If happiness to you is
A thin layer of grape jelly on buttered toast,
Feet dipped to ankles on pacific coast,
Campfires that let marshmallows roast,
Handwritten letters from old-fashioned post,
Or the taste of peppermint patties more than most,
Then, I might be able to make you happy.

If happiness in you was
Inherent, present, or apparent,
If it was merely in need of augment,
If it was more than supplement
Necessary to circumvent
Your cemented torment,
Then, I might be able to make you happy.

But if happiness eluded you
Before I came along
How can I make you happy?
I can't - no, not at all.
