Author's Note: Hi guys! Sorry this is a little late also I think I'm shadowbanned on TikTok cause I guess the clock app is homophobic. I hope you guys enjoy the chapter and yes you'll find out what happened in the Spiral Games Era eventually... I might add in more Emily povs in chapters though, because her story won't really be explored when you find out about what happened.
Thomas was shaken awake at dawn by Minho, who whispered to Thomas to meet him in Homestead as soon as he could. Minho left the boys side to jog away to Homestead.
Thomas lifted his head, still dumbstruck by his sleepiness and his eyes strained at the first soft lights of dawn glowing shyly over the Maze walls, illuminating the blissfully quiet Glade in a dim blue light, it was full of long shadows and inky shapes. The glow also made Thomas feel a bit dizzy.
Thomas felt a weight of someone beside him and he hurriedly shook off his grogginess, seeing a still peacefully sleeping boy curled up next to him.
Newt.
Thomas quickly averted his eyes, cheeks red, not really wanting to stare at the older boy as he slept. You naturally let your guard down as you sleep, which Thomas knew, and he wouldn't really want someone gaping at him while he was in that kind of vulnerable position.
Thomas, not wanting to disturb Newt, slowly slid away from him, but instantly missed the warmth that seemed to radiate from the older boy when he shifted away.
He felt kind of bad to just leave Newt there, so he'd have to wake up alone. He gently shook Newt's shoulder, and Newt blinked awake, rubbing his eyes, and his drowsy gaze finally rested on Thomas.
His eyes shot properly open, and he sat up properly, and said, "Uh- uh- hi Tommy..."
His voice was slightly rough but he seemed quite aware of his surroundings, and said, "Wh-what's up?"
"I-I need to go running," Thomas said, gazing into Newt's flustered, slightly confused expression, "I didn't want you to be worried about where I'd gone..."
"I... uh... thanks," Newt gave him a soft grin, then said, "go on, go to Minho, he won't appreciate me stealing one of his Runner trainees."
Thomas nodded, smiled, and got up, starting to leave.
"Oh and Tommy?"
Thomas turned around.
"Well done. For becoming a Runner."
Thomas gave him a grin, "Couldn't have done it without you."
Newt smiled back, and Thomas turned away and sprinted off to Homestead.
Minho was waiting, but patiently, and he grinned at Thomas when he arrived. "'S been a while since I last had someone to train," he mused happily, "it's fun to do it, I missed it."
Minho simply led Thomas to a crooked cranny in the corner of Homestead, and pulled out a key, opening up a dark, shabby door, leading to a small storage cupboard.
Thomas felt a shiver of anticipation wash over him, and he wondered what was inside.
Against all odds, he saw the light from Minho's torch flash over ropes and chains, and then land, bizarrely, on an open box full of ordinary running shoes.
Thomas almost laughed, as it seemed so strange, so normal.
"There's the number one supply we get," Minho announced. "At least for us. They send new ones in the Box every so often." He leaned down and rummaged through the pile, "What size are you?"
