Tw: Swearing, descriptive murder, mentions of blades, mentions of injuries, mentions of weapons, mentions of suicide, description of corpses.
"Shit," River breathed out, staring at the cracked, broken, insane person. He couldn't pull his eyes away from the thing, frozen in complete shock.
He looked down at the wooden handle, and flicked the metal line. Out of nowhere, a blade swung upward with a smooth click.
Alec stared at the blade, then at River, his breath coming out in sharp, quick wheezes.
They both stared at the beast in pure horror, and River bit his lip, hard enough to draw blood. He turned to Alec and said softly, "I'll sort it-"
"No!" Alec protested instantly, "I'm not gonna let you die! You said you have a sister! Do you really want to leave her with no answers when you don't come back to the facility! Live for her! I'll try to kill the Crank!"
"And I'm not letting you die either!" River riled up back to the older boy, backing up to him, pointing threateningly at him with the blade, trying to get the stubbornness out of the boy's vivid blue eyes. "That's stupid! I'd never do that! You know I can fight the thing!"
"But-" Alec's soft voice was cut off by Janson's voice, booming and tinny over the speaker. The only sound apart from that to River was the Crank's sounds of manic, tiny peals of laughter as it stared at it's chewed off fingers. Blood was spread around it's mouth and the fingers looked almost mouldy at the end of where it was gnawed on.
"Hello, children. You're probably shocked or surprised at what's going on. What you see before you, is a Crank, one of the monsters that is past Gone from the disease called the Flare - but of course you already know that. We are going to ask you to kill it with what you were given as a weapon. They are anything from cooking spoons to large kitchen knives. Good luck!"
"Fuck you!" Several of the kids yelled back, River and Alec hearing the words echo around the corridor, along with pleas for mercy and screams of complaints.
"We're... we're just kids," Alec whispered helplessly, staring into each corner of the room, searching for a camera, a speaker, anything to signal someone was there. "WE'RE JUST FUCKING KIDS!"
He started crying helplessly, "I'm gonna die... you're gonna die... we're all gonna die... I'm only twelve..."
River, however, although wanting to comfort the boy, saw that the chains binding the Crank were rolling away, releasing it. The small, hunched figure barely noticed, but River's grip on his knife tightened, trying desperately to rid of his guilty conscience.
This person was human too, once.
You're killing someone.
You're a monster.
But then River thought of Emily, who was probably praying and praying that he would come back to the barracks alive.
He was all she had left.
River stared at the Crank, tears welling into his eyes as the decision finalised in his mind.
I'm sorry.
He turned to Alec, who was staring wordlessly at him, perplexed and shaken.
"I'll do it, Alec," He smiled through the tears, through the overwhelming horror, "I have to live for Emily."
