As per Krishna's suggestion, Subhadra had beautifully dressed up and gone to Somnath temple. After she offered her prayers, Subhadra was on her way to return.
As told by Krishna, she found Arjun mounted on his rath, on her way back. He quickly made her sit on the rath and they both escaped.
The guards and the maids who accompanied Subhadra got shocked and they hurriedly went back to Dwarika.
When the news broke out about Arjun eloping with Subhadra, all the Vrishnis raised their swords at the court of Dwarikadheesh, showing their anger and resent.
"We will kill that Arjun !" One minister said.
"He has betrayed us ! He has ruined the sanctity of us Vrishnis !" Another said.
"Warriors of Vrishni clan ! Arjun has insulted our hospitality ! We will chase him all the way to Indraprasth !" Balram said raising his mace.
He then looked at Krishna who was sitting quietly with a smile plastered on his face, as if enjoying this quarrel.
"Looks like Krishna doesn't agree with us." Balram said.
"I said nothing Dau." Krishna said.
"I fear your silence only Kanha, did you not remember when you eloped with Rukmini, his brother Rukmi tried to stop you !" Balram said.
At that Krishna stood up and went in front of Balram, looking at him with a calm face.
"I had not taken Rukmini against her wishes Dau. She had called me to help her for she was forcefully being married to Shishupal. And I deem Subhadra's situation no different." Krishna said.
"What are you saying Kanha ?" Balram frowned.
"I am saying exactly what you heard. Just like Rukmi was adamant for Rukmini to marry Shishupal, you too were adamant for Subhadra to marry Duryodhan, you didn't ask for her permission. Thus she took Arjun's help." Krishna said.
"Who told her about my decision in the first place !?" Balram asked.
"I did Dau. Hearing such a 'good' proposal, I couldn't help but inform such a 'happy news' to her." Krishna said, sarcasm evident in the tone of his voice.
"If she had disagreed then why didn't she ask for your help !? Why Arjun !?" Balram asked.
"Because I had made it very clear that it is Dau's decision and I cannot defy it. Maybe that's why she would've taken Arjun's help." Krishna said.
"But Dwarikadheesh, Arjun has betrayed our trust ! We will wage war against him ! He has invited his death !" The ministers blazed raising their swords.
"By waging a war against that Vibhatsu, you all will be inviting your death." Krishna said bluntly. The ministers fell silent at that.
"So are you saying we do nothing ?" Balram asked.
"Don't forget Dau, Arjun is also Tamasvini's husband. He is the jamai of Vrishni clan, we cannot take his life." Krishna said. Balram fell silent at that.
"But Arjun has disrespected us." One minister said.
"Actually Arjun has honoured us. Warriors, listen to me. A daughter is not a gift that can be given to anyone, she is a human, her consent is necessary for any marriage alliance. Arjun saw the fault in our marriage system, thus he protected our honour by eloping with Subhadra. We should be grateful to him." Krishna said.
Everyone fell silent and listened to the wise words of Dwarikadheesh with full attention.
"Arjun is the best among men, chief among Kshatriyas, he has conquered the entire northern direction mounted on just one chariot. I don't think anyone besides him in the three worlds is worthy of marrying Subhadra. I say, we must bring Arjun back to Dwarika, and honour his marriage with Subhadra." Krishna said.
"That is cowardice ! We must fight Arjun for what he has done !" On minister chimed in.
"Look at yourselves, legs are shaking with intoxication, eyes are red from Madira, do you really think anyone of you stand a chance against that Vibhatsu ? Only the tankar of his Gandiv will send you flying back to Dwarika, entire Bharatvarsh will laugh at us. But if anyone still thinks he can withstand Arjun then please, go ahead and prove yourselves." Krishna said.
The ministers lowered their gaze and weapons, the swords were put back in the myan.
"I knew this would happen if he starts to talk. Now go and bring back Arjun with respect !" Balram ordered.
