NOAH
"Noah, I think we need to break up."
I stared at Renee, her iridescent grey eyes lifting to meet mine, her usually charming smile now missing from her pretty face.
"W-what?" I stuttered, unable to fully comprehend her words.
"You heard me," She shrugged, bringing her knees to her chest and placing her chin upon them. "This isn't going to work out."
I gaped at her, wondering how the person I loved the most could be saying something that hurt me so much.
"Why, Ren?" My brows furrowed in puzzlement. "Things are working fine!"
"Are they?" She looked up at me, tilting her head slightly, a frown evident on her face. "Look at us, Noah, you're a Spirit and I'm a human!"
Ah. The eternal barrier that separated us.
"W-We have telepathy!" I told her, trying to sound cheerful.
"Yeah, and that works so well, now that you're in the Pit," She uttered, sarcasm playing through her tone.
"Ren-"
"Noah, I hate to tell you this, but the Earthly Realm is my reality. And the Spirit Realm is yours..." She bit her lip, looking worried.
"What do you mean?" My heart rate shot up erratically, and I swallowed the anxiety that was coagulating as the lump in my throat.
"Are you even real? Like, can you prove that you're not a highly vivid dream?" Ren blurted out, tightening the knot in my chest.
"Ren, that's... That's ridiculous!" I tried to laugh it away, pretending like she'd cracked a joke.
Her still demeanour silenced me soon.
"Don't you love me?" I asked her, wringing my sweaty fingers in anticipation.
"I wish I did, but I don't think I do," she hung her head, looking embarrassed. "How can I love you if you aren't real?"
"But I am real!" I protested weakly.
"I want a boyfriend beside me as I walk through life... Not someone who keeps talking in my head," She told me impatiently. "I want a real human guy, Noah! You're pretty awesome, but I don't think you're the one for me..." She sighed, and I noticed a single tear glistening on her cheek.
I raised my fingers to wipe it, but she beat me to it, brushing it aside harshly and getting up.
"Where are you going?" I asked her, my voice high from the panic.
"Goodbye," She muttered, not meeting my eyes.
"Ren, what the hell?! You can just leave!" I stood up too and caught onto her arm.
She turned around, and I saw her glaring unexpectedly at me. I released her hand, my world spinning in disbelief as I tried to digest her reaction.
"Noah, we've caused enough chaos in the Spirit Realm. I don't think we're meant to be together," She told me, her voice much steadier now.
I could feel my heartbeat in my throat, tears blurring my vision before spilling onto my cheekbones, which I didn't bother to wipe away.
This cannot be happening.
"Ren, are you serious? You're actually leaving?" I demanded, my voice croaky from crying.
"Yes, I am. This is for the best," She looked up, her fingers softly wiping away my tears. I let her, the soothing feel of the tips of her fingers felt like a balm to my aching heart.
And yet, it stopped too soon for my liking.
"Bye Noah," She said, her voice painfully gentle.
"Ren, no," I shook my head, my eyes clinging onto her withdrawing gaze.
"I'm sorry," She whispered.
"Don't... Ren..." I couldn't form complete sentences as the pain strangled me, and the tears ran like a river, drowning me in sadness.
Renee walked away, her footsteps echoing across the stone floor. I would've run behind her, but my legs seemed to be made of lead, anchoring me to my place. My pleas fell deaf on her ears, and she slowly disappeared into the darkness, the copper glint of her hair being the last thing that I could see in the faint light.
I fell to the ground, crying my heart out.
The love of my life had walked away from me.
Forever.
