CHAPTER SEVEN:
❝︎Limbo❞︎"HIS MOM'S A NURSE?" Alaska questioned, a frown falling on her face as they continued to walk towards Scott's workplace. Liam nodded his head, causing the girl to hum. "And his best friend's dad is a sheriff." Liam nodded again. "He's just got strings in all directions, don't he. He dating anybody?"
"You don't even know the guy, yet you're already wanting to date him?" Liam scoffed, though he tried to make it sound like he was kidding, however, it came out with a more jealous tone to it. He wasn't jealous. Was he? He couldn't be. He refused to be. He brought himself from his thoughts when a laugh left her mouth, causing a smile to curl up at the corner of his lips. He loved her laugh, her smile, everything about Alaska was so amazing to him, and it made him even more determined to help her. He couldn't help the breath of relief that left his lips when he saw Scott's motorcycle parked outside of the animal clinic.
"And this guy works with animals." Alaska gasped. "Lucky. I love animals."
Of course you do, he thought, which made him smile even more. He pulled open the door, allowing Alaska to go in before him to which she thanked him. "Hopefully he isn't working with any animals right now. But if he is, we could always wait. . . or whatever you want to do―︎"
"Liam?" Scott's voice grabbed their attention, causing them to look at him. Liam noticed his furrowed eyebrows and the confusion dancing in his eyes. "Liam, who are you talking to?"
Liam pointed towards Alaska. "Alaska." Scott slowly raised an eyebrow, his eyes shifting over to the space where Alaska should've been standing, but instead he saw nothing. "You don't see her?" Scott shook his head. "Well, you probably wouldn't. She's dead--well, not dead. She's sort of dead? I don't know how to explain it."
"Limbo." Alaska told him. "It's when you're in between the living and the dead."
"Limbo." Liam nodded. "That's what she said."
"I―︎" Scott stuttered. "W-why? How?"
"When I find that out I'll be sure to get back to you." Alaska gave the boy a sarcastic smile even though he couldn't see it.
Liam turned to her with raised eyebrows. "Someone's got an attitude this morning."
"What did she say?" Scott questioned.
"She said, 'When I find that out I'll be sure to get back to you'." Liam sighed. "I promise she's really nice. And she's real." He stepped forwards as Scott opened the gate for them to enter, closing it when Liam nodded. The three made their way to the back.
"Why is it that you can see her and I can't?" Scott questioned.
"I don't know. I was sort of hoping you could help with that." Liam waited patiently before Scott nodded, telling him to give him the details. "Well, she was supposed to start coming to our school two days ago, she's been attending classes and everything, but no one can see her. And she keeps doing this fading in and out thing, and we think that she's running out of time. We think that she's alive, but we don't know where her actual physical body is, but we think she's hurt really bad and we need to find her before she actually dies. Which is why I―︎we―︎decided to come here, because I knew you wouldn't mind helping because you like helping people, even though said person is basically invisible to everyone but me."
"Mhm. Don't forget to, I don't know, breathe." Alaska raised her eyebrows at him, her arms crossed over her chest as she smirked in slight amusement. Liam glared at her, making her press her lips into a thin line, though she couldn't contain the snicker that fell. She knew that this wasn't a laughing matter and that it was a literal matter of life and death, but she didn't handle serious situations to well, so her coping mechanism was laughing at inappropriate times.
"What's her name again?" Scott asked. "Maybe Stiles' dad has heard of her. Who did she come to town with?"
Liam looked at Alaska, silently re-asking the question. Alaska stood there for a few moments, her eyebrows furrowing as she tried to think, but it all came in flashes, none of her memories clear and after a moment she had to stop thinking for it hurt her head too much. She shook her head. "I don't know. I don't remember."
"She doesn't remember." Liam sighed.
"Alright." Scott nodded. "And, her name?"
"Alaska. Alaska Waldrop."
"I'll give Stiles a call, see if he can find out anything from his dad."
"Well, what do we do while we wait?" Liam questioned.
"Since we don't really have anything of hers to s―︎" Liam quickly shook his head, cutting Scott off. He stuttered for a moment before catching himself, "We uh, we're gonna have to do this old fashioned. So it's going to take a little more time. So, until we find something out from the Sheriff. . . you're going to have to hand tight."
"Hang tight?" Alaska scoffed.
"Alaska," Liam warned.
"Liam, I don't have time to hang tight." Alaska argued, turning to look at him. "I'm dying. Or, I think I am. And I―︎" She stopped, looking down at her hands as she watched them fade in and out for a moment. She swallowed thickly, looking up at Liam who had watched the same thing that she had. She was running out of time. And she was running out of time quickly. She held her hand up in front of her face, watching it fade and appear over and over again.
"It's okay." Liam assured, going to place his hands on his shoulders, only for his hands to fall through. He slowly pulled his hands back, meeting her eyes and seeing the fear that was swirling through them. "We're going to figure this out, Alaska. I promise." And all she could do was hope that it was a promise he could keep.
