CHAPTER THIRTEEN:
❝︎Out Of Time❞︎THE NEXT DAY CAME A LOT QUICKER THAN THEY ORIGINALLY PLANNED, BUT NONETHELESS THEY HAD GATHERED A PLAN THE NIGHT BEFORE. Liam hadn't been able to sleep the night prior. He was too busy wondering if Alaska would still be alive in the morning, and when she had appeared in his bedroom that next morning he had wanted to desperately to hug her but instead let out a breath of relief. Their plan was still ago, he just hoped they found who they were looking for.
Alaska was nervous. She didn't necessarily wake up because she couldn't really sleep. But through the night whilst waiting for the sun to rise and for the pack to wake up, she had watched herself fade in and out of existence. She had stared down at her hands, her body, for so long watching it fade in and out. That's how she knew this was her last chance. There was no way that she was going to be able to survive another night. Hell, she had barely made it through the night.
She was determined to stay alive. She had to find where her body was. She had to help the pack find where her body was. She didn't want to die. The thought of death actually scared her. She was already so close, she was literally on the bring of death. She could practically feel Death himself lingering over her shoulder, ready for his moment to reach out and snatch her soul when she could no longer fight. She was almost tempted to turn around and grab Death's hand, but she knew she could do this. She had to, now that she had so many people trying to help her.
Alaska softly sighed, brushing her hair from her face as she patiently waited outside of Liam's home, deciding she wouldn't invade his privacy like she had the other day. The sound of the door creaking open grabbed her attention. She turned her head, smiling as she spotted Liam exiting his home whilst shrugging his jacket onto his shoulders. He pulled at the jacket before making his way towards Alaska with a warm smile on his face―︎the kind of smile that made her heart pound in her chest and butterflies to explode in her stomach.
"Are you ready?" Liam asked her and immediately she nodded.
They started to walk towards town. Alaska gnawed on the inside of her cheek. wondering if she should tell Liam about her almost fading away the night before. He just looked so happy to be in her presence in general, and Alaska didn't want to ruin that. She could see the determination etched into his face, into his jaw line, into his clenched fists that kept unclenching before tightening again as if he was nervous. She knew that he understood that this was their last chance, and they had to whatever they could to figure this out.
The sound of Liam's phone ringing, grabbing their attention. He quickly pulled it out, informing her it was Scott. "Scott?" He listened for a moment before nodding. "We're headed to our side now. If you find anything. . . yeah. Thanks." And then he hung up. Alaska raised an eyebrow in silent questioning. Liam looked at her, shoving his phone back into his pocket before smiling at her. "Scott's in position, along with the others. They're looking for him."
"You never showed me a picture of the man we were looking for." Alaska hummed. "How am I supposed to know if it's the right guy or not?"
"We're hoping that maybe some of your memories will trigger when you see him, get us closer to finding you." He didn't realize how close they would come to find Alaska. He didn't realize that what he was about to witness was going to make him so angry. Since he'd met her, the connection between them only grew stronger and stronger. All he wanted to do was protect her. All he wanted was to bring her back alive and well.
They entered town, occasionally entering shops, but for the most part they stayed on the sidewalk. Scott, Stiles, and Lydia had all texted, saying they hadn't found anything. They were both growing more and more worried as the seconds passed by. Alaska swore she could hear a clock counting down the seconds until it was time for her to die. It was making her head ache. She watched herself fade away for a moment before coming back, a sad sigh leaving her lips.
"It's no use." Alaska whispered. "We should just give up now."
"No." Liam was quick to shake his head, turning to look at her. "We are not giving up, okay? We can't. Not when we've come so close―︎"
"Close?" Alaska whispered, trying to force the tears away from her eyes. "You know just as much as I do that no one has even the slightest clue as to where my body is. Liam, I'm going to die."
"Don't say that." He clenched his jaw in anger.
"I'm sorry for dragging you into this." Alaska shook her head. She so desperately wished that she could reach out to him, to hug him, hold his hand in hopes of comforting him. But she could do none of those things.
"We're not giving up." Liam shook his head and started walking again. Alaska was quick to follow after him.
"Liam." She sighed, forcing herself to run until she came to a stop in front of him. "Liam!" He stopped, watching as she blinked out of existence for a moment before appearing again. "We're out of time, Liam. I. . ." However, she suddenly trailed off. Liam furrowed his eyebrows as he looked at her.
"Alaska?" He watched as she moved around him. He followed her eye sight to one of the benches, the same man he had run in with a couple of days ago sitting there with a beer in one hand and a cigarette in the other. He watched as Alaska walked closer to the man. "Alaska?" He asked again, but she didn't respond.
Her eyes were focused on the man and only on him. And when she saw his face, it all came back in a flash. A gasp fell from her lips as she staggered backwards in surprise, watching the images play out behind her eyes, the memories making her heart shatter and her veins fill with fear as a constant stream of tears started down her cheeks.
"Alaska?" Liam panicked. "Alaska, what's happening?"
"I―︎" She sobbed, trying to catch her breath. "That's him. That's the one. . . that's my step father."
"I would say that's good news but by the look on your face it's not."
She forced herself to turn away and to look at Liam. "Liam. . . he's the one that did this to me."
