CHAPTER NINE:
❝︎More Protected❞︎STILES STILINSKI STOOD THERE WITH HIS EYEBROWS FURROWED, HIS ARMS CROSSED OVER HIS CHEST AS HE TRIED TO THINK OVER THE WORDS THAT SCOTT HAD JUST SAID TO HIM. He exchanged a glanced with Lydia and Malia before turning back towards Scott and narrowing his eyes slightly at Liam before looking back towards Scott. He wanted to hide the disbelief on his face, but he couldn't find it in himself. Finally, he cleared his throat and held out a hand.
"So let me get this straight," he started, "a girl named Alaska―︎as in the state―︎went missing, and Liam can somehow see her but no one else can't because she's in a state of limbo and she'd practically dying so we have to find her body in order to take her soul―︎which is apparently fading in and out― ︎and bring it back to her body so that she can live. Did I hit all of those points?" Scott took a moment before nodding his head. Stiles ran a hand through his hair before deciding to go along with it. "A-alright. Well, why is Liam the only one that can see her?"
"We don't know." Scott answered, exchanging a look with Liam before turning his head back towards his best friend. "That's what we're hoping to find out. There's a lot of questions with very little answers and we need to figure out those answers fast in order to find Alaska and keep her alive. And uh. . . she doesn't. . ." He trailed off, but they all understood what he was trying to say. He could sense someone else in the room, knowing that Alaska was there, listening to their conversation but not having the ability to answer any questions they had without forcing Liam to talk for her. Which was something she hated―︎according to Liam.
"Doesn't know about what?" Malia frowned, eyebrows furrowed. "The fact that you and Liam are werewolves, I'm a werecoyote, Lydia's a banshee, and Stiles is human?" They all turned to look at her with a blank look whilst Stiles had his eyes closed, looking at Scott with a silent apology. It was progress. Even if they weren't together anymore, Stiles was still trying to help Malia be human. Secret keeping clearly wasn't her strongest suit.
"What?" Alaska's voice made Liam turn to look at her, her eyes widened slightly. She glanced towards Lydia who was telling Malia that it wasn't the right time to 'rip the band-aid off'. She turned back to Liam, arms crossed over her chest as she frowned. "Did she just say that you're a werewolf." He opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out. Was she mad? Angry? Scared? Well, she was already scared to the fact that she was dying. But was she scared of him? Now that she knew his secret that he hadn't wanted her to know.
"Sorry." Malia apologized, shrugging. "Did I scare her off?"
Liam didn't answer, and instead continued looking at Alaska who was staring at the floor. She looked up, glancing around the group before she suddenly felt her shoulders relax. "Suddenly, I feel a little better knowing that I didn't put my hands into mindless humans. Am I a little freaked out? Sure. Who wouldn't be when you just found out the guy you trust with your life was actually part of the supernatural world?" She looked at Liam before shaking her head. "I'm not going to run away just because you're different. I'm here to find my body. And to get my memories back. And if I have to involve myself with the supernatural to do it, then so be it."
"Why is he just staring at the wall?" Stiles cocked his head.
"Because the invisible girl is probably standing in front of the place in which he's staring." Lydia reasoned.
"Or maybe Malia made her run away and now he's longingly staring into the place she had once been in anger." This earned a look from both girls and Scott. Stiles nodded. "My bad."
"She said she feels more protected." Liam finally spoke. "She said that if she had to put her life in anyone's hands, including the supernatural, then so be it. She just wants her life back. And we have to give it to her."
"Well, does she have any personal belongings at her house maybe?" Lydia asked. "You could try and find her scent. If she's somewhere bleeding, the blood and her personal scent might mix together and make it stronger."
"She doesn't remember anything." Liam sighed. "Scott said something earlier that triggered something that made her remember a certain point in her life. So in order to find her, we have to help her get her memory back."
Stiles turned to Scott. "You forgot to mention the amnesia part."
"I didn't mention that?"
"No. No, Scott, you didn't mention the fact that this stranger who we know nothing about doesn't even know anything about herself to help us out." He sighed before nodding. "Alright. Let me talk to my dad. See if he can get an address, something to give us a starting point."
"We know she went to Devenford Prep."
"Let's start there." Lydia suggested. "Liam can take her over there, see if anything triggers anymore of her memories. Scott can go with. And Malia and I can go with Stiles to see if his dad can figure something out." She paused for a moment, turning her head slightly at the sound of footsteps, rustling leaves and wind echoing in her ears with the sound of a clock striking. She swallowed thickly before looking back towards the group that was looking at her. "Something tells me we don't have long."
"It's getting late." Scott started. "We can start in the morning. In the meantime, we all need rest. We'll meet up here tomorrow afternoon. Reconvene. See if we're any closer to finding out where she is."
They all nodded in agreement before all making their separate ways home. Liam and Alaska walked down the road, Liam's hands in his pockets. Alaska was quiet. Too quiet. And when Liam turned to look at her he realized why she was so quiet. Alaska wasn't there. She had faded away. And the fear that spiked in his heart made him realize how close to death she really was. And he wasn't sure if she was going to last another night.
