Lacey didn't know how she ended up outside Masons house at just gone midnight, but here she was, knocking on his door, hoping he would be awake still, her hair slightly messy, her eyes bloodshot from crying and the earlier tears still stained on her cheeks.
"Lacey?" Mason whispered, his voice deep and croaky, Lacey assuming she had just woken him up. "I promised I'd come" Lacey whispered, as Mason nodded his head, moving aside and letting Lacey inside his house.
"But why did you come?" Mason asked, as he stretched his arms above his head, yawning in the process as his grey t-shirt rose up, exposing the bottom of his toned stomach, Lacey's eyes falling down his body, taking in his blue checkered pyjamas that he always wore, his hair fluffy on his head, sticking up slightly providing the fact Lacey had woke him up. "Because I couldn't sleep" Lacey whispered, as Mason yawned again. "So you woke me up?" He questioned, his tone of voice slightly annoyed. "Could this not have waited till the morning?" Mason mumbled, as Lacey looked down at the floor, realising that coming over was a mistake.
"I didn't want to upset you" Lacey whispered, as Mason shook his head. "I'm not crying" Mason muttered, as Lacey felt a pain in her chest, his words hitting her like a tonne of bricks. "Mase" Lacey whispered, as she looked up at him, tearing her eyes away from the floor as she heard him sigh.
"We're always arguing over petty things" Mason muttered, as he leant back against the arm of his sofa, Lacey still standing in front of him, not wanting to move from the spot she had placed herself in. "And all I think about when we argue is how you didn't even want me in the first place" Mason whispered, as Lacey felt the same pain in her chest, as her eyes looked over Masons facial features, taking in the pain in his eyes, realising she had in fact caused that, and almost like deja vu, she saw the same pain in his eyes the day she had when she left for LA.
"How everything we've ever been through haunts you, the fact I always said I'd wait for you, but happily moved on" Mason continued, as the pain in Lacey's chest grew. "I mean, maybe we were always destined to fail" Mason muttered, as he ran a hand through his hair. "I mean, everyone's thinking it, how would we even work with you in America" Mason muttered, as Lacey realised the pain in her chest was her heartbreaking. "And I think of how many times we're going to keep doing this" Mason breathed, looking up at Lacey. "How many times were going to push and pull each other away, how many times were going to unintentionally hurt each other and then act like we're fine till our emotions blow up in our faces" Mason whispered, as Lacey sighed to herself, holding her hands to her chest, wishing the metaphorical pain would go away, that she would wake up and this be a dream. She may of been mad at Mason, maybe even pissed off, but she didn't think that this would happen. "Maybe we were both too damaged to have a relationship together, maybe the timing would never be right, but I look at us now and think what happened to the two people who were messing around with each other, happily enough with that circumstance" Mason muttered, as Lacey took another deep breath in, trying to steady herself, trying to steady her emotions. "I love you Lace, but I don't think any love in the world is worth the pain I feel when we argue over nothing, when we hurt each other without even trying to" Mason whispered, as Lacey nodded her head.
"So what are you saying?" Lacey finally whispered, finally breaking her own silence.
"To quote your words, if we're meant to be we will find our way back to each other" Mason whispered, as Lacey nodded her head. "So just to clarify, you're breaking up with me?" Lacey whispered, as the pain finally stopped in her chest, and all she felt was numbness, as Mason nodded his head, but his face had changed, the pain she saw earlier that was covering his face, wasn't there, it was almost like he was emotionless.
"I can't do this anymore, I can't keep letting you push me away" Mason whispered. "I used to think I could never love someone like you, someone who was so broken, and maybe for a short term I fixed you, like a plaster on a cut, but if you wet the plaster, it'll fall off, and it won't work again" Mason whispered, but his voice was clearly auditable, as Mason referred to their relationship as a plaster.
Lacey nodded her head, turning to face the door, not wanting to let Mason see her break."Go and smash LA" Mason whispered, as she turned back once more to look at him, wanting to remember the happier moments of their relationship, but looking at how emotionless he was, it was hard to remember anything positive about them right now.
Lacey nodded her head, before she opened Masons door, stepping out and letting the harsh wind of February attack her.But as soon as the door closed and she stepped onto the pathway outside the house, she couldn't help but let out a quiet sob.
The truth was that sometimes you could love someone so much and want nothing but the best for them, but you couldn't be together, it didn't need to turn sour for people to work that out, sometimes you just had to love someone from a distance, and let them live their life. But Mason was right, sometimes you had to let someone go and if they come back to you, they really belonged with you. Sometimes you had to be with someone, and love them, to realise that they wasn't yours to really love anymore, but that didn't mean you stopped loving them.
And maybe, all of this had been a heat of the moment, hard choice made, and maybe after some sleep things would work out, and the world would be right again, but also, maybe not everyone got their happy endings in life.
