The summer's heat was as scorching as ever, with every day taking shape as a new inferno.

It was nullified by a deep, cold feeling that had embedded itself dangerously into Y/n's being, with the girl often burying herself in her work and her hobbies.

She knew that if she stopped for a moment to breathe, she'd drown in the memory of that fateful April day.

The girl was barely halfway through her third ever shift at the coffee shop, cleaning and quietly minding her business as she tried her best to stay out of the people's way.

The girl was content with her cleaning position. Ecstatic, even.

She was in a happy little bubble of minimal contact with customers, and she felt it was a wondrous first job.

But it would soon turn out to be much more than she had signed up for.

At around 1pm, the manager strolled into the lobby and approached Y/n, who had been wiping down the crumbs from off of the tables.

"Alright, kiddo. I'm training you on the register today," he had said and the girl was mortified.

She froze and her manager turned and walked towards the register, fully expecting her to follow behind and not question his decision.

Mr. Reeves didn't see the way Y/n slumped, or how she began to play around with her fingers out of anxiousness as she stood petrified beside the cash register and watched the man go over the buttons on the touch-screen panel.

"Now that you've seen me take a few orders, why don't you try?" He turned to the girl expectantly and motioned for her to step forward.

Y/n's heart raced as she very hesitantly took her position at the register.

"Your first customer," he had said to Y/n in front of a boy that had been waiting behind the counter. "Go easy on her kid," Mr. Reeves said as he looked at the boy. "Anyways, I'll be in the back counting the safe."

Y/n whipped her head around and saw her boss retreat to the back. She very subtly reached out towards the man, wanting him to come back to at the very least make sure that she wasn't messing anything up.

As soon as the man slipped away, Y/n turned to the boy with her lips pulled in tight against one another.

"Hello," she greeted awkwardly.

The boy was tall, lean, and had his hair slicked back. He sported a worn out green bomber jacket that he wore effortlessly.

"Hey," he responded casually as he held a polite smile on his face. "Can I have an iced caramel coffee?"

Y/n froze for a second, blinking up at the boy before snapping out of it and inputting the order onto the monitor.

"It'll-It'll be 3.50," she said as she sheepishly looked up at the boy. He nodded and pulled out his wallet, passing the girl a 5 dollar bill.

She silently charged the boy and he thanked her, then moving on to speak to Y/n's coworker, Niccolo.

"What's up?"

"Hey, asswipe," Niccolo greeted the boy as he dove himself into the coffee making process.

Niccolo made the drink, and Y/n assumed she was done with her task until he asked her to hand it to the boy.
