Short chapter. Had to cut it up because a lot of the times my chapters come out too long

Half of the school day had gone by fairly quickly, and Y/n now headed towards the lunch line in a daze, thinking about all of the new things in her fast-changing life.

If she were to put it simply, the start of her summer had been overwhelming. Her chest had a perpetual feeling of pressure weighing down on it as she had kept reliving the first ever fight she had with her best friend. But she had found that summer gradually melted away into something sweeter. Something that called for change within her jumbled life.

Y/n was still a ditz, and she was reminded of that when she accidentally bumped roughly into a passing stranger.

"Sorry!"

She glanced up with an apologetic frown at the guy she had collided with, who looked to be a part of Marley's disbanded football team with his letterman jacket displaying the big 'M'.

"It's fine," the boy said.

The two were about to depart and head off on their own way, but something stopped them and made them do a double-take at each other.

As the boy looked down in wonder at Y/n, his hazel eyes took in the sight of the nervous girl's features.

"You look familiar," he said and a flashbulb lit up in Y/n's mind.

"Colt?" She asked softly, hoping she hadn't been mistaken.

The blonde's eyes widened in glee and he gave the girl a radiant smile.

"Y/n!"

He hugged her and Y/n chuckled lightly, feeling her heart glow at the sight of an old friend.

Letting go, Colt marveled at the girl.

"You've changed so much!" he exclaimed and Y/n flushed.

"You have, too!"

"I missed you," Colt admitted shyly as he rubbed the back of his neck. His hazel eyes meekly met the girl's. "I always wondered what happened, why you just...suddenly stopped hanging out with me and the others in sixth grade."

The boy sounded a bit hurt, and Y/n hugged her binder closer to her chest, feeling her heart shrivel for hurting who she had considered to have been a dear friend.

"I'm sorry," she said regretfully. "It's just that—do you remember Sabine?"

Colt nodded.

"Yeah."

"Well—she started spreading lies about me, and about," Y/n awkwardly pointed to herself and to Colt, feeling uncomfortable, "about you."

The girl shifted on her feet and looked at the ground.

"She started calling me really derogatory names because I would hang out with you and the guys. And it made me feel like crap so I...stopped coming to lunch and stayed in the classroom."

"What would she say?" Colt asked, stepping closer.

Y/n bit the inside of her cheek and exhaled.

"I don't really like to say those words, so I'm just gonna say that she told a lot of people that I was--um, promiscuous."

The blonde's face dipped down in disbelief.

"What the hell was her problem?" He frowned deeply as he looked away. "We were in sixth grade, we were just kids!"
