Chapter 16: Living Day by Day
Snow was gently falling as the priest said his part. Heidi's coffin was raised above a small hole just for her. Dmitri, Natasha, Maxim, and Eva(all dressed in black) had accompanied Nataliya(who was also dressed in all black), she wasn't exactly sure why but she did appreciate the company. The large guard that accompanied Eva and Nataliya was also there, along with two others.
It was the end of an era, an end to Heidi and Nataliya's reign, an end to their love, an end to their fun. Nataliya knew it would have ended with one or both of them dead, she had just hoped it would have been herself, not Heidi.
The priest finished up and the coffin was lowered. There was a finality to it, a slow, melancholic descent. It was pleasant, it was peaceful. The coffin hit it's mark without a sound. Nataliya grabbed a handful of the dirt and threw it into the hole before standing above it, still supporting herself with her cane.
"I know you all didn't know her," Nataliya said, looking at the group, "But I still want to say a few words," Nataliya looked back down at the new, and eternal, home of her lover, "She may have caused grief, death, destruction, pain, and a host of other negative emotions... but I still loved her... and she loved me... We went through so much together... she didn't deserve this... She deserved to die a noble death, not the victim of a faceless sniper," tears came to Nataliya's eyes as she remembered the bullet passing through Heidi's skull, "I hope you find peace... wherever you may be..."
The rest of the day was very droll. Everyone trying to comfort Nataliya in their own ways. Except for Dmitri, he kept away, he knew that she needed space, not an explosion of hugs. After they ate dinner Nataliya couldn't stand it anymore, so she slipped outside onto the patio. The house itself was moderately C-shaped, in between the three walls was a pool that was currently frozen over. The mountainous guard was standing watch outside on the patio, alone.
Nataliya hobbled next to him and looked at him, he was staring off into the night.
"So what's your name?" Nataliya inquired.
He didn't respond, simply glanced down at Nataliya for a second before turning his gaze back to where it was before.
"You must be pretty impressive to guard Dmitri's children alone."
He didn't respond.
"Strong, silent, type, eh? I get that," Nataliya looked in the direction he was fixated on, "If you're as impressive as I believe you are, then why are you guarding children?"
Still no response.
"I expected as much. You look and act like a well-trained soldier, yet you take spoiled children shopping. I can't understand why someone would demean themselves so much. You should act as you see fit."
"I do not act for myself, but for others," He said in a quiet tone, soft, yet true.
"So you're just a tool?"
"Yes. You, are not, and that means trouble."
"I'm not planning on being used, I just want to get revenge. Do you think I am going to be trouble?"
No response.
"Back to this then?" she sighed then returned inside.
