Chapter 5: Destinations
"Okay," Isaak began, "Now how the hell do we get out of here..."
"Well I haven't been to this area of the city much," Lilia said, looking at the roof of the car, "But I believe that the road going north is the T1707, If we take that for awhile we should be able to turn and pass through Terentivka, then the roads should be easy to follow to the M03, seeing as I doubt we want to get on it this early on."
"Thank god for your sense of direction, sis," Nataliya said, smiling and looking at her sister.
"Okay then, buckle up and let's go," Isaak said, turning on the heater. They pulled out of the parking lot and onto the T1707.
"Oh my god, Nataliya, you're bleeding!" Lilia said, shocked.
Nataliya had forgotten the wound she was delivered by the Belarusian, it started to hurt again at her realization.
"It's just a graze," she responded.
Lilia leaned into the passenger seat and took a first aid kit from the glove box.
"Lucky us!" she said, pulling off Nataliya's coat and rolling up her sleeve for her. she disinfected the wound and wrapped it with gauze, "There, all better."
"Thanks sis," Nataliya said, sarcastically. She put her coat back on.
"I think I'm going to take a nap," Lilia said, yawning.
Nataliya patted her lap and said, "Always open."
Lilia scoffed and placed her head on her sister's lap, curling up to allow herself room to lie down. It took a few minutes before Nataliya was convinced that she was asleep.
"So Isaak," she began in a soft tone, "Why did you lie to us about your military history and whatnot?"
"I figured you'd be more willing to trust a new recruit rather than a hardened soldier. A draftee would be in a similar situation as you. Plus I am sure you heard some of the rumors about rapes in some of the homes soldiers were staying at."
"But you made your lie too obvious, you were much too calm about this situation."
"I never said I was a great actor."
"So what're you going to do when we get to Kharkiv, even Lilia will notice your change in rank."
"When you were sleeping earlier I told her, figured you'd tell her eventually anyway. By the way, you're very adorable when you sleep."
"Shut the fuck up."
He muffled a chuckle.
"Turn here, I can see Terentivka."
Isaak nodded and did as she said.
They passed through the village, it was completely abandoned.
After a long while of silence Isaak finally said, "I have been meaning to ask, when you told me about the Belarusian you just killed, you seemed angry, yet the other two you seemed calm about... why?"
Nataliya thought for awhile about a good answer, none came to mind.
"Something must have been different, right?"
