The next day was very long and very difficult. Exhausted didn't even begin to cover it. I spent most of the day yawning and struggling to keep up with classes. I had never been happier to break for lunch.
Kastuki approached me timidly, as if he was testing the waters.
"Hey, so... Are we good?"
"Why would we be bad?"
"Yesterday I... I kinda just left you hanging. I feel kind of... I don't know." He rubbed the back of his neck, refusing to look at me.
"Oh?" I raised my eyebrows.
"I just don't want you to be mad at me like before."
"I think that's the nicest thing you've said to me. You might as well have stood on a chair and announced to the world that I'm your bestest friend." I chuckled. Despite my joke, I knew that him opening up was difficult, and I was quite proud.
"We aren't friends, shit head." He scoffed.
"Then what are we?"
"I don't know."
"Me neither." We both trailed off and left each other in a thick, awkward silence. Eventually, I decided to just say what I wanted to.
"Katsuki-"
"You stopped calling me Katsu-kun." He pointed out abruptly, stopping me.
"Yeah. I guess I did. Do you want me to start again?" I teased.
"Fuck off. I just wondered why."
"I only did it to annoy you. I was surprised you even let me use your first name."
"I was surprised too..."
"I would have stopped if you told me you didn't want me to."
"I know but I-" He retorted a little too quickly before stopping himself. "Whatever. What were you saying?" After taking a deep breath and preparing myself, I blurted out.
"I don't want us to get closer."
"What?"
"Well, no, actually, I do. But I don't think we should."
"Are you fucking crazy?"
"Probably."
"No, seriously. First of all, who says that I want to 'get closer' to you?" He put his hands on his hips sassily. "Second of all, why not? What's wrong with me?" That comment kind of hurt me. Not because I was offended, but because there was nothing wrong with him. Why would he think that?
"Okay, okay. Sorry for assuming... And nothing's wrong with you! Why would you say that?"
"Why would YOU say THAT?" We looked at each other for a moment.
"I'm worried. I had a guy try and straight up kill me! He threatened me. He said- Well... I just don't want to hurt you, or any of my other friends. I could be dangerous."
"You? Dangerous? Don't make me laugh." He said dryly. "What did he say?"
"It's nothing."
"What did he say?" He demanded.
"He said that I'm a danger to myself and the people around me. That I can't escape what my family did. What if he's right?"
"And what if he's wrong?" Katsuki took my hand in his and looked me in the eyes. His ruby gaze burnt with the same passion and determination that they usually did, but there was something else behind them, something close to pleading. Breaking eye contact, I looked down at our entwined fingers. He was holding my hand. At school. Without even mentioning being seen by anyone like he did before.
Suddenly, my eyes got watery.
"Thank you." My voice cracked slightly.
"For?"
"Everything." He smiled at me.
Click.
"Fuck!"
"Mina, you idiot!"
"I thought I had it on silent!" Our faces dropped. Katsuki closed his eyes then faced the bushes that were near us.
"Did you just take a fucking photo of us?" Kiri was the first to step out.
"I tried to stop them!" My phone buzzed. Mina had sent the photo to the group chat.
"You're all going to fucking die!"
"Kat, no!" I yelled, running after Katsuki, who had sprinted at the group, explosions popping in the palms of his hands.
That afternoon, we all got changed and gathered outside for some practical work, all chatting happily among ourselves. While Father stood in front of us, quieting us to explain what we were about to do, an all too familiar portal opened up behind him. Eyes wide in shock, I buzzed my bracelet a few times, trying my best to send a warning. What was Shigaraki doing? A guy that I didn't recognise stepped out.
He was pretty tall, had pitch black hair, and was covered in scars and... Staples? Something about his eyes looked familiar. Someone shouted out 'Aizawa' but, before he could react, the man hit him on the back of the head, knocking him out cold. I gasped. Shigaraki and another person stepped out.
"Hinami!" He waved. "Fancy seeing you here." Katsuki, who was standing beside me, put his arm slightly in front of me. Mido raised his fist, but the first person held up his own hand, little blue flames sparking out.
"One move, and you're ash. Little shit." Blue flames. That must be Dabi. I recalled Shigaraki telling me about him before.
"Why are you here?" I could feel everyone watching me closely.
"Did I ever introduce you to Noi Kyo?"
"You've never introduced me to anyone." I replied stiffly.
"What the hell is going on?" Kami whispered next to me.
"That's the same portal thing from the USJ attack!" Yaomomo pointed out.
"You're a clever one." Shigaraki laughed. "You're right, that was me. Sorry!"
"You're with the League of Villains?" Tenya couldn't help but ask. "Hinami, why do you know a member of the League?"
"A member? I'm offended! I'm the leader. Not that she knew that." He cackled. My whole body froze. The leader? He made out that he was just a low ranking foot soldier. That he had nothing to do with anything. That means that he must have planned the USJ attack. My parents almost died!
"YOU LIED-" I shouted. But I was cut off by Kyo stepping forward and locking eyes with me. Something about him was mesmerising. He slowly lifted his hand up to his chest and pointed one finger to the sky. I watched him intently. He moved his finger from left to right. I couldn't help but follow along. It was like something was compelling me. My vision went fuzzy and the noise around me muffled as though I was underwater. Everything dulled except for Kyo's finger...
