Things clattered around her as men shouted orders and ran away from Zeke's study as quickly as possible. Zeke huffed as he riffled through things on his oak desk.

[Name] scowled as she took a step closer to the worried man in front of her.

"Must you go?" she whispered.

"[Name]," he huffed, before slamming his desk closed.

"Zeke you are the King of Marley. If something were to happen to you–"

"I won't be the King of anything if I can't get the Karifa District under control," he mumbled under his breath before his eyes landed on a small chest in the corner of his desk.

"Karifa is only a small part of your country." she countered.

"Small but influential district. It's a border town, if they continue to spread the rebellion, who knows how many more districts might try and revolt."

[Name] looked out the window and shook her head. "It's the middle of the night. And the ambassador of Slava is coming tomorrow, what am I going to do with half of the soldiers gone?"

He sighed, and before she had the chance to say anything he revealed out a golden ring, with a large ruby cut to size in the middle.

"What is this?"

"It was my father's... If anything happens to me–"

"Zeke,"

"Make sure my son gets it."

Her stomach sank. "Your son?"

He nodded, "Pieck should be giving birth in a couple of weeks."

She closed her eyes and looked down at the ground. "You... you dare ask this of me?"

"I'm begging you, wife. I do not want to worry Pieck about her condition... and I trust you."

She looked up at him and swallowed the lump growing in her throat. She extended her hand out, "I shall give it to your... son."

He nodded it and laid the ring in her soft hand, and they stood in silence for what felt like an eternity. Her heart clenched as she stared into his worried eyes, and hard features. And that was when she realized he was scared, he didn't want to leave.

She wished she could comfort him, she wished she cared enough about him as a person to do more, but she simply didn't. The only things that tied them were empty vows and a sense of loyalty to their own people, and at least in that sense, at least at that moment, she could understand her husband, as a King, as a ruler.
