Eren wanted to be cruel to her, to reject her evasive confession and abandon her in the room with a thousand words stuck in her throat, just as he had done all those years before. Unfortunately for him, he couldn't treat her in such a harsh manner twice, and he couldn't walk away from her a second time, especially since she had just confessed that she had once loved him, even if it had been a long time ago.

"Life has refused to grant me the same mercy." Eren said suddenly. "My heart is still yours... it will always be yours."

The confession came out of him unintentionally, like boiling water spilling over a kettle, and it was out of his grasp before he could catch it. He regretted it the moment he saw her pretty eyes close and more tears fall down her cheeks.

He could tell by her eyes that she hadn't expected such a response, and he could tell she didn't know how to react as he saw her fidget with the wedding ban wrapped around her finger.

She shook her head and went up to hold his face, to wipe away his tears before they fell.

"You are wrong, Eren Yeager," she said, her shaky voice barely audible over the rain pattering against the stained-glass windows. "In that regard, God has shown me no mercy, for over a thousand sunrises have come and gone, and there hasn't been a single day or night when you haven't come to my mind or clouded my judgment, or haunted my dreams... I may be married to your brother, but what I feel for him pales in comparison to the love I have for you..."

A sudden feeling of coldness overcame him, and he felt his mind begin to grow dizzy as his muscles went slack.

Too many things came too quickly for him to process: euphoria, disappointment, anger, and sadness, all at once, and he felt as though he would lose his mind if another moment of silence passed, but sadly she broke the silence.

"I know... I know it is incredibly selfish of me to tell you this, but I could not drown in my misery any longer," she whispered, her voice weak, and her face drained of color. "I only wish... I wish things could be different,"

Those were the last words she said before she crumbled in front of him, burying her face into both hands as sobs began to roll out of her body. As he saw her completely break down in front of him, he shoved the suffocating feeling in his chest and pushed himself towards her, wrapping her shaking body in his arms.

She gasped underneath him, and he could feel the moment of hesitation as her body froze, but it had been too many years apart, too much pain carried for her to put up much of a fight.

It felt like fire everywhere their bodies collided, and then an unexpected smell of lavender slammed his nose like a ton of bricks, and it took him a second to understand it was her, that it was her scent. Then he realized he had forgotten what she smelt like, in the same way, he had forgotten the cadence of her voice and the way her dimples still showed when she was upset.
