Not even an hour had passed before Eren found himself standing in front of the hidden entrance to her room. The space was hidden in between the walls. It was barely wide enough for a single person to walk through, and he let out a sigh of relief once he reached the hidden panel that opened into her bedroom.

Gently, he pressed his ear against the rough surface, listening carefully for any sounds of voices that might indicate that she wasn't alone, and when he was satisfied with the thought that no one else was around, he dipped his torch into the soil until the flames died, pushed the panel open, and stepped inside her room.

Warmth engulfed him as he closed the panel behind him and he found the woman he loved turned to him and her shoulders slumped as she stared into the fireplace. She didn't even bother turning around but he caught her wiping the tears from her face.

He felt heavy as he saw her desperately try to hide her pain, and without speaking he placed his hand over her shoulder. A shallow breath left her lips as she leaned into his touch, pressing her body against his frame, and closing her eyes. They stayed like that for a moment, before Eren sat down next to her.

Without looking at him she started to speak.

"I saw the way you looked at me in the Great Hall... you looked at me as though you didn't even recognize me."

"[Name], what are you talking about?" He said his grip around her hand tightening. "I could care less about the scene. What I care about is you, and your safety... You risked so much to send those children away. You risked Zeke's anger, and Pieck's vindictiveness, and for what? To make a statement?"

"What? Is... is that what you think of me?" She asked, and he could see the pain strewn all over her face. "E–Everything I do, every step I take is to keep those I love, safe. Including you."

His face fell.

"To keep me safe?" He questioned. "You think what you did tonight was to keep any of us safe? You should've heard what Pieck told me tonight..." He trailed away, not wanting to scare her even more than she already was, but she had already caught it.

"What did she say to you?"

"They hate each other, Eren! You–You and I know. We know them better than anyone else."

"She was angry, she was desperate.Pieck's cunning, she's ambitious." Eren dodged the questions, his hands instinctively going up to cradle her face, and he felt his heart ache as he gazed into her eyes. "That's why I worry for you. She's not someone to cross, regardless of your station."

"You think I don't know that?" Her voice was as soft as silk. "That woman wants to put her children on the throne. It's been her plan all along, and now the seeds she planted years ago are begging to sprout... and I'm scared, Eren. I'm so, so scared, and angry at her, at Zeke, at myself, for allowing the situation to continue."
