She forced herself to look at him again, to make sure she wasn't imagining him.
No matter how many times she blinked, or how long she stared, Eren was still there. He was standing in front of the crowd with his arms crossed behind his back.
Her breathing slowed as she stared at the man she used to love, for this was no longer the same man staring back at her nearly six years since their last meeting.
His eyes used to be bright, she could've sworn. Now they stared back at her dull and worn out. The six years had changed him, his brown hair was longer now, past his chin, he no longer had a neatly-shaven face, and he'd seemed to grow leaner.
Only one thing remained unchanged; the quiet rage and blind determination behind his gaze.
It made chills run down her spine.
After his interruption in the Great Hall, Zeke told the nobles to continue the celebration and he and [Name] swept Eren away into Zeke's study.
The rain continued to patter against the window and the only source of light coming in the dark room was the fireplace that crackled.
Zeke sat on his chair and [Name] stood behind him, one hand resting on the post. It was an intimating pose, one she and Zeke had grown accustomed to over the years, but it felt distorted in front of Eren, the same man that had caused such rift and distrust in their marriage so long ago.
"It's been a long time, Eren," Zeke mumbled as he began to serve himself and Eren a glass of bourbon. He slid the glass over to his younger brother. "Why are you back?"
"My mother," Eren said, setting down the cup of bourbon without taking a single drink. "She's sick."
Eren went out to tell them a story of his mother's mysterious illness, how it had been eating away at her for months, and no matter how hard the physicians tried to help her, she wasn't improving.
"You want her to come back here?" Zeke asked, and [Name] took a deep breath, hiding behind her husband, the man who despite all his faults, and mistreatment had stayedby her side. She stole a glance at the stranger that sat in front her
"It's been nearly seven years since you banned her, Zeke," Eren said. "She was like a mother to you too once, and she needs help. The best doctors in all of Marley are here in court... it's all I'm asking of you, that only thing that I've asked of you over the years."
Zeke looked carefully at his brother, before setting his glass down and looking over at his wife.
"What are your thoughts on the matter, [Name]?" Zeke asked gesturing for her to come forward.
