* 5 YEARS LATER *

The bright morning light beams through the tiny gap in the curtains, making me groan as I hide my face in the pillow. I still hated light.

I start to drift back to sleep, getting comfortable when the bedroom door swings open. "It's my birthday!"

I sigh, trying to block out the noise but I can't escape it when I feel someone crawl onto the bed, jumping with joy. "Mummy! Wake up, it's my birthday!"

Opening my eyes slowly, I turn, glancing at the alarm clock. 6:23 am?

I watch Lucia as she sits herself down on the covers on top of me, smiling. "Mama?"

I smile tiredly at her. "Yes?"

"I'm 5 today!" She holds up 6 fingers, making me laugh as I pull her closer to me. "I can't believe it," I say softly. "My little girls gone so big."

She giggles, looking at me with her big blue eyes. "Can I wake daddy?"

I pretend to think. "Why don't you jump on him as well?"

She giggles uncontrollably as she stands, jumping up and down on the bed once again. Lucius opens his eyes, groaning in exhaustion. "What have I told you about jumping on me first thing in the morning, Lucia?"

I cuddle up next to him, smiling as Lucia laughs and lays on his torso. "Hey, it's her birthday. Allow it." He smiles, closing his eyes as he holds our daughter to his chest. "Happy birthday, little one."

"Thank you, daddy," she yawns as he strokes her hair lightly.

He grins without saying a word. I noticed Lucius always had a unique bond with our daughter. He loved both our children with all his heart, but Lucia... she was special to him. Probably because he nearly lost her. "Lucia, where's your brother?"

"Luke!" She shouts. Within a few moments, we hear the tiny pattering of footsteps through the hall until he reaches our room. He giggles, when he sees us, running to the bed and climbing on top. "Good morning, baby," I kiss his cheek as he giggles, snuggling into my chest.

Winky comes running in not long after our son, gasping for air as she looks at us apologetically. "Forgive me, miss. He ran so fast."

Lucius scowls at her, but I merely smile. "That's fine, Winky. Don't worry about it."

"It's not fine," Lucius growls. "He could have fell."

"Lucius," I say, too exhausted to deal with his mood swings this early in the morning.

This man was so difficult, there was no doubt about that. Being with him did sometimes feel like I was automatically expected to follow a lot of rules. But after that night we nearly lost each other, I never said a word against his paranoia. He was just worrying constantly for me and our kids.

I still thank god that Lucius didn't die that day. The doctors say he had a very slim chance of waking, but after his heart stopped for 25 seconds, I still had hope he would make it back to me. And he did.

We didn't waste any time after that. As soon as he recovered, we married and moved into the manor together. Lucia was still a baby when we redecorated the house a little more child friendly and when we we finally settled in, we lived a quiet, peaceful life. 3 years later, I gave birth to Luke, our 2 year old son.
