"What do you mean there's no chance?!"

"We've been over this, Ray," you gritted your teeth as you placed your book back on the proper shelf. You and Ray were shelving books back after the younger kids practiced their reading. "My scores are too low and I'm too old."

"I turn 12 first though! I should be the first to go out of the older kids!" Ray insisted, despite it being futile.

"I can't do anything about it Ray," you sighed. "She didn't say a set date yet either."

"Don't give up so easily! You can do something, we can plan to leave earlier, we can make sure you won't get shipped out!"

"Lower your voice," you whispered, glaring at him. "And it's better me than anyone else anyways."

"No! If anyone should escape it should be Emma, Norman, you and me! We deserve to escape, of all people, we've dealt with the burden of knowing, no one else. We deserve to be happy."

You frowned. "Do we, Ray? After watching all our siblings walk towards their deaths? Not trying to stop them from going, even?"

"We did that to escape with all of us eventually"-

"You, me, Emma and Norman aren't everyone," you argued, fighting back tears. "Don and Gilda and Phil and Carol and everyone else, they're everyone. We need to save everyone. I know it's stupid, I know it sounds impossible, but we can do that. We already have a head start right? I can help with the plan, I can do anything you need me to do, I can do all the risky tasks, because I'm not vital to the plan. You are, Emma is, Norman is, but I can be a sacrifice if it's for us to win against the demons."

Ray grabbed your shoulders and shook you, gritting his teeth. "What do you think, this is some sort of chess game?! This is your life we're talking about, you can't just sacrifice yourself like some pawn!"

You sighed. You were tired of this.

"I thought you were the realistic one Ray.

I mean you betrayed us anyways so why do you care?"
