"Y/N-chan," Isabella called you over, after dinner. You stood opposite to her in the dark hallways, lit dimly by lights. "I have some bad news for you."
"What is it mama?" You asked.
"The people who wanted to adopt you. They changed their mind."
What? Your eyes widened.
You fought back a smile.
You would live.
"They-" You forced your smile down, working hard to frown. "They did what?"
"Don't worry though," she smiled, ominously, as she looked down on you. "There's always next year."
You nodded, pretending to try to smile. You bit your lip. "Yeah, there's always next year. And this just means I can spend more time with my first family. I'm sort of glad actually." You were tearing up now, biting down on your wobbly lips. "I didn't want to leave my family yet."
"Hm, don't worry. Although," she placed her hand down on your shoulder, squeezing it, tight, too tight, get your hands off- "The same family decided to adopt Ray. So I'd spend some time with him for a bit."
"Oh," you looked down. "That's good for him."
You ran over to the library, rushing, opening the door and shutting it, to see Ray up at the highest ledge of the library.
"Ray!" you yelled.
Ray looked down, eyes wide, and quickly hushed you when he realized it was you. You hurried up, making your way up the ladder. Once you'd made it up, Ray moved over for you to sit. You scrambled up, and fixed your glare at him.
"What the hell? You're next?! Why would you agree to that! I'm next, I should be next!"
You knew they would get out before then, but just in case, just in case they needed extra time, maybe your shipment could help them plan while Isabella took you away to your death, maybe you could prevent Norman's death, maybe you could change something for the better-
Ray put his hand on your shoulder. "There's nothing we can do about it now."
"Please, please, Ray, ask her to go through the shipment for me!"
"Why?!" He took his hand off of you, lips turning down, as he glared back. "You know what's going to happen! You know you'll die!"
"I don't mind!" You whisper-yelled back. You grabbed onto his hand. "If I can help you guys get ahead of her, by even one step, by taking her away for a few minutes, we would have a better chance of beating her, c'mon Ray, you're death wouldn't benefit anyone."
"Do you think yours would benefit us? In what way? Stop acting like you're death would help us, like it would put us any further than we are. We wouldn't get anything out of your death, it would be useless. I won't let any more useless deaths happen."
His grip tightened on your hand.
"I won't let Emma die. I won't let Norman die.
I'm not letting you die."
