{ chapter 10 : bedroom arrangements }
"But every time I reach for you,
You slip through my fingers."🛡🛡
Truthfully, Gwen had not much experience with children. The most that she had was when she had watched over Lucy during the war with the telmarines and even then, it wasn't exactly babysitting. This boy clearly didn't want to be in Narnia and he had fainted with fear, she didn't know how to calm him down.
Carefully, she placed him on one of the lower hammocks in the crew quarters as that was the only space available and tried her best to make him look comfortable. It wasn't the nicest of beds but it was better than the floor and as she was tucking him in with a thin blanket, Eustace began waking up.
His eyes widened when he realised that it hadn't been a dream and he tried to push her away but Gwen was stronger and faster, grabbing his arms before she could lose her balance. "Woah, take it easy there, sir - just trying to do my job."
"Who are you? Where am I?"
"My name is Gwen." She said calmly, trying to keep her voice gentle and slow. "You're in Narnia, ever heard of it before?"
"My cousins talk about it, it's rubbish - a stupid made up land!" He snapped, his eyes darting around the bunker.
"Well, I hate to tell you but it's definitely not made up. You're in it. Now, what's your name?"
"Eustace Stubbs." The boy answered without questioning before his eyebrows furrowed and he recalled a memory from beforehand. "Did a bull talk to me?"
Gwen chuckled at his curiosity, knowing that he would have many questions because it was his first time in Narnia. "Tavros is a minotaur - he's harmless really, big lover at heart."
"You were in the water, weren't you?"
"Correct, no need to thank me though."
"Thank you?" Eustace asked, raising an eyebrow to her.
Gwen clapped his back, grinning. "You're welcome, wasn't so hard, was it?"
"No! I...no...that was not-"
"I have to get going. Plenty of things to get done on the ship, you can help when you're feeling better. If you need anything, find me, Caspian smiles too much and Reep talks too much." She spoke rather quickly and he struggled to understand exactly what she was saying but caught the last sentence when she paused. "Remember my name?"
"Gwen-"
"Good - get some rest and I'll check on you later." She clapped his shoulder again before leaving the quarters without another word. Eustace was an unusual child and she didn't know what to do with him, so she decided to not let him talk as much and then he was easier to control.
