Six weeks of the spider dream later and Sidney was still trying for whatever reason to befriend the king. He was annoyed with her attempts, though hearing her scream was more than enough to pacify his urge to kill her for daring try. He loved the sound of his pawn's screams. It was like music to his nonexistent ears. "sidney... you look horrible, what in stars name is going on with you?" Sans paused. "is it him?" She shook her head. "Nuh-uh.. just can't sleep." Sidney replied. Her expresso brown hair was a mess, once vibrant Nordic blue eyes were dull with dark bags under her eyes. "because of him. kid, you need to tell your therapist. he's in your head, he'll kill you at this rate. or drive you absolutely nuts. neither are good." Sans was worried and you were touched.. but.. "I'm fine Sans, really. I can handle him." She sighed and yawned. "maybe you can take a nap now so you don't have to deal with him when he's expecting you." She gave Sans a serious look. "He's always expecting me, Sans." Then she laughed. "Oh, wow, look at the time. I'm off, bye Sans."
"sidney!" He tried to call her back.

Sidney laid on her bed awhile before deciding to clean herself up. She brushed her hair and brushed her teeth. She picked up the book she was reading and found where she left off. Instead of reading though, she plunged into her thoughts. What had happened to Nightmare to make him like this? In her experience, it was trauma that made people addicted to others pain. Nightmare, he called himself the king of nightmares and negativity, but surely he'd even had some sort of positivity once upon a time ago. Could she fix Nightmare? Could she become the positivity he needed? First she'd need to beat him at his own game. She'd been working on it for six weeks. If not today, she felt like she was close.

Nightmare POV

"nightmare."
"dream." I sassed back, tentacles twitching with desire to kill the little bitch. "are you threatening sidney?" Threatening my pawn? Not really. It's been a good six weeks or so since I did that. Or at least, since I physically did that. It's been longer since I verbally threatened her. "no, why? is something wrong with it?"
"your obviously torturing her through her dreams, yet she won't say anything. she's protecting you for whatever reason. you have to be threatening her. I was surprised. Protecting me? Any sane person would take the opportunity to get rid of my influence. She was not? Was it due to this 'befriending' me thing she was going on about? What a foolish woman. "goodbye dream, i have no interest in the female nor do i desire her help." I was a big boy, I was a king. I didn't need anyone. Especially some girl with a death wish.. speaking of.. she was asleep.

Sidney was greeted with the usual darkness that Nightmare's presence brought. "Good evening, King Nightmare." She turned to the king, who looked startled a moment. "and goodbye." Down she went into the spiders nest, as she called it. She steeled herself, closing her eyes. The creepy crawlies did their thing, climbing up her as she stood tensely. She held her mouth firmly shut. She wouldn't scream, she would let them do their thing. Nightmare watched feeling impressed. He didn't like that she was impressing him by facing her fears. He couldn't seem to help it though. It seemed.. she was winning his little game. He sighed heavily. "i suppose you deserve a prize then, pawn. good night." He receded, allowing her a night on her own to finally rest peacefully.
