If Eric could find the strength to stand up straight today was not it. His Mum was gone and now his selfish actions had put Nell in the hospital.
He slumped onto one of the waiting room chairs next to an elderly gentleman holding a stuffed bunny.
"Rough day young man" the gentleman asked.
"You could say that, yeah" Eric said rubbing his hands on his temple.
"I saw them wheel your girl in, sorry"
"For what."
"I don't actually know, I suppose it's the social convention to say sorry to someone waiting for a loved one in the hospital" He said gripping the bunny tighter.
"You know why I'm here but why are you here, um"
"Arthur"
"Eric" pointing to himself "Why are you here Arthur"
"Waiting for my granddaughter." he said holding up the bunny. "I bought it from the hospital shop"
"I'm sure she will love it".
A man wearing scrubs over normal clothes ran into the waiting room and double over breathing heavily.
"Dad." he managed to wheeze before having to take big gulps of air.
"Well, spit it out David." Arthur said impatiently creaking up from his chair.
"She's here" he said hugging Arthur.
"Well lead the way." he said strutting through the doors decade younger at the anticipation of meeting his new granddaughter. "oh and no running."
Eric was left all alone, running his thumb over Nell's cardigan which he had retrieved for her from OPS after he knew she was safely in the ambulance.
All he had to do now was wait and it was killing him.
