Denki knew Midoriya well, more so than others thought. Although, that might have something to do with the fact that they don't really hang around each other when they are with their other classmates. It wasn't intentional, they both simply tended to stray towards their own groups. Aside from that, when everyone was doing their own thing, he and Midoriya hung out all the time. It started out as a study session.
Denki loved his friend group, and he knows they mean well, but he didn't need to be called dumb or stupid all the time when he didn't know something. He had overheard class 1-A's resident bush teaching Uraraka in the kitchen not too long into their first year.
When Uraraka got the answer wrong, instead of making a backhand joke about her being an idiot, he gave her a hint and told her to try again. He didn't realize he was paying attention to the two until Uraraka seemed to get stuck on a question and Denki walked over and pointed out the answer, adding in an explanation to why.
Actually, it wasn't until he was going over his own homework in his dorm that he realized what he'd done. Looking back at the question now, the instructions made absolutely no sense, but somehow, he knew the answer; and he knew he got it right because Mido had congratulated him on it. Which felt nice, he'll admit.
It wasn't that the question was easy, or something he'd done a million times, he for once actually understood the instructions and was able to work out the problem. He reread the question again. It was almost as if it was in another language; and then he noticed something. Midoriya didn't include any of the large vocabulary that was in the problem, explaining them through their meaning instead. He also took out all of the unnecessary details, so the question was straight forward and to the point.
Denki had no idea how he did it so easily, but it was no surprise to him when he found himself knocking on Aizawa's favorite problem child's door. It was quiet for a moment, and then the door opened to an absolutely adorable bush in a hoodie way too big for him. Mido glanced at his hands to see Denki's school work, and instead of groaning or telling him not now, he smiled and opened the door wider to let him in. "Need some help?"
Denki rubbed the back of his neck, walking into the room. "Yeah, not too good at this stuff."
Mido hummed, "I beg to differ." He had no idea what that meant, but the male was already closing the door and gesturing him further into his room before he got the chance to ask.
"So, what do you need help with?"
"Errr...all of it?"
Midoriya left out a snort, "Alright, better question, where do you want to start?"
Denki pulled out the Math worksheet from earlier.
Mido gave him a confused look, "You know this, you helped Uraraka with it earlier today."
Here's where he'd be called stupid, "I, uh, don't understand what the questions are asking me."
Instead, he nodded. "Aoyama has the same issue actually. I think they put in all the fancy words to be jerks, but they don't really mean much." He went on to explain the first problem on the page without so much as an eye roll.
Denki forced himself to stop staring at his helper and pay attention, he really didn't want to make Mido repeat himself. And that's how most of the night went. Midoriya would explain the problem, Denki would solve it easily, and they would move on to whatever was next.
Since then, he'd been going to Mido for help with whatever he didn't understand, which more often than not was everything. At first, he was afraid he was being a nuisance, but Midoriya always seemed so genuinely happy when he stopped by, even started teaching Denki how to read the problem himself, so that he would be able to remember for tests.
