"I don't want any," you say, then turn to look at Emery slyly. "But I think you do."

"Me?" Emery says, gripping his chest dramatically. "You're not about to give up your faction dreams just for me, are you?"

"I'm not giving them up," you correct, pushing up his hair and handing him the needle. You take the small monitor. "Now, come on! I want to see what's going on with you."

He looks at you, then nods with a small smile. "Okay."

He injects the serum with a small wince, and his eyes drift shut. You grab him just in time before he goes over the edge, dragging him back, your hands under his armpits. He slumps back against you, and you jump back, fingers tingling. It's nothing, you say to yourself, turning back to the monitor.

You watch as Emery approaches two tables, one with a knife and one with cheese. He looks around, and suddenly they vanish. He jumps back, and then there's a dog, running at him, full speed. He jumps up and launches a powerful kick at the dog, knocking it backwards.

You've seen him fight like that before. Not often, but he will if he has to. He was born factionless, just like you, but you still don't know where he learned it.

Suddenly, a little girl appears. His eyes widen as the dog rushes towards her, and he flings himself in front of the girl, cringing for impact. It disappears right before it hits him, and then he's on a bus.

"Do you know this person?" an angry man hisses, and Emery grips the rail next to him.

"No," he says, jaw working. You squint. You recognize the person in the portrait, but from where?

"You could save me," he hisses, suddenly pleading, and you see Emery hesitate.

He looks away. "I do, I know, I know him," he admits, "but how-"

The simulation disappears, and he jerks awake. The monitor blinks, flashing through Dauntless and Abnegation like it can't decide, and then settling on Divergent.

"Divergent?" you whisper. "I've never heard of-"

Emery's eyes widen at the result, and he grabs the monitor and smashes it with a crash, flinging it off the side of your concrete apartment.

"Don't tell anyone what you saw here, Y/N," he says, wrapping his arms around himself, shaking. "I can't be Divergent. Don't- you can't tell anyone."

"I won't," you promise, nodding. "I won't."

He relaxes, laughing slightly. "Thank you for letting me try the serum. I've always wondered if I- well, you know. Thank you."
