Visiting Day- 68

The dormitory is quiet today, somber. Christina looks up at you as she makes her bed, then back down again. Molly's nose is swollen and purple, held together by medical tape. 

"Attention!" Eric snaps, storming into the room. "I want to give you some advice about today. If, by some miracle, your families do come to visit you, which I doubt, it is best to not seem too attached."

That won't be a problem, you think wryly, eyes drifting from Eric to the gray of the concrete dormitory around you. The others slip out of the dormitory, jogging towards the Pit, and you join them, smoothing back your hair, feet thudding against the ground. 

You pass Tris. "Big day, huh?" you say, swallowing past the block in your throat.

"Yeah," she says, not looking up. She looks nervous.

"You'll do just fine," you say, offering her a smile. "They'll be there."

She smiles back, walking ahead. The two of you stride into the Pit in a burst of light, the airy cavern flooding your cells with daylight. 

Drew and Molly sit alone, braced against the wall, looking anywhere but at you. You jog down the steps and pretend to look for your family.

A shout catches you off-guard, and you see Peter standing next to two Candor. The father practically shouts his words, the mother nodding, her red hair bobbing.

Will stands next to a woman in blue, gold hair pairing perfectly with her dress. You see the others in a blur of succession, Christina and two Candor, Tris running over to her mother, Dauntless with pierced eyebrows hugging parents with dyed hair. Four stands alone, too. You look away before you make eye-contact, hugging yourself and staring out at the crowd.

A surge of pain floods through you, and you close your eyes. You didn't choose where you started, but you did choose here. You turn to the Pit, taking a deep breath. This is your faction now.
