THIRD PERSON P.O.V.
(Present)
They pulled into the hospital parking lot and Dean watched as they unloaded the stretcher holding Jess and took her inside. They seemed to be moving in slow motion and Dean wanted to yell for them to move faster but he couldn't make his voice work. He followed them through the big glass doors and suddenly his senses began to work again. He saw everything moving at the right speed and he could hear the doctors and nurses yelling at each other as they began wheeling Jess down the long hallway. He went along with them, trying to stay with her but he was stopped by an elderly nurse.
"Excuse me sir, but you can't go with them. I need you to stay here please."she said as she stopped him gently.
"No you don't- my daughter- I-" Dean couldn't find the words to explain what he was doing. Luckily the nurse seemed to understand which was good because Dean was unable to make heads or tails of his current situation.
"Sir, I know that you must be worried about your daughter, but I promise that the doctors will take good care of her. Now while they do that I'm going to need you to come back here, fill out the necessary forms, and tell me what happened." She said kindly laying a hand on Dean's arm and guiding him back toward the reception desk. She gave him the forms to start filling out and at his insistence when to see how Jess was doing. The elderly nurse came back with a doctor.
"I'm Dr. Lawson. You must be the father of the young girl who just came in, correct?" He asked and Dean nodded.
"I'm Dean Smith. How's Jess doing?" Dean asked immediately cutting to the chase. Dr.Lawson sighed a little.
"Well, sir, there is no exit wound which means that the bullet is still lodged somewhere in your daughter's abdomen. In order to remove it we will need to perform surgery which, considering the fact that she is a minor, we must have permission from a legal guardian to perform." Dean was nodding his assent even before the doctor had finished speaking.
"Do whatever you have to do, doc. Just, please, do everything you can to help my little girl."
"Of course Mr. Smith. We'll begin as soon as all of the surgeons are prepped." With that Dr. Lawson walked away leaving Dean to his thoughts.
"Hey Dean. Any word?" Sam asked as he walked up to his brother.
"Doctor says that the bullet's still in her. Apparently there was no exit wound. They're doing surgery to remove it now." Sam stared at his brother trying to figure out if he was okay. They sat in silence for a while, waiting for some news. After what seemed like a lifetime Dr. Lawson came up to them. "What's up Doc?" Dean asked standing to meet him.
"The surgery was successful. We were able to locate and remove the bullet without difficulty. We were also able to make sure that there was no fatal internal damage inflicted, which luckily there wasn't. However, I must warn you. With cases like this it is possible for the patient to slip into a coma, the body shutting itself down in an attempt to avoid further damage. I'm afraid that we won't know right away however. The anastasia should wear off in an hour or so. If she wakes up then, marvelous. If not then...her body may have temporarily shut itself down."
THIRD PERSON P.O.V.(past)
As Dean went to turn the impala around Sam grabbed his arm.
"Dean, it's too late. We got to get out of here before the cops show up. We'll come back for him, don't worry." Dean sighed angrily as he realized that his brother was right. They needed to get out of there. Taking a deep breath, Dean kept driving until they were out of town. Sam looked back at Jessie, who had fallen asleep in her carseat.
"So, what now?" He asked suddenly.
"What do you mean 'what now'?"
"What are we going to do with her?"
"What do you mean -" Sam cut Dean off with a look.
"You know what I mean."
"Simple. She's coming with us." Dean said calmly.
"What? Dean, you can't be serious."
"Well, Sammy, do you have a better idea? Dump her somewhere? I'm not going to just leave my kid on her own. It was one thing leaving her with Lisa, another to leave her on her own." Dean gave Sam a look that clearly said, drop it. Sam sighed and shoved his hands in his coat pocket.
"Oh, Dean. I almost forgot. That shifter burglar back there had this on him. Guess he couldn't resist or something." Sam said as he pulled a gold chain out of his pocket for Dean to see. Attached to the chain was a small circular locket with hearts engraved on the front.
"That was Lisa's." Dean said as he took it from Sam. He opened it to see a picture of Jessie, Lisa, and Ben together inside. Shutting it, Dean put it in his coat pocket.
"So, where are we going now? "Sam asked, trying to fill the silence.
"Well, I was thinking that we could stop by Bobby's until we get another case. And, you know, while we get used to our, uh" Dean grinned at Sam, "new little friend here."
