It was the first week that had passed without a student receiving a red envelope from the ministry, a saddening fact as they were halfway through the Marauders 7th year at Hogwarts. Days passed and when Saturday arrived the spell of good luck broke when Dumbledore stood to speak. "And finally it has been a great week with no saddening news from our Ministry which in times like these is a positive we-" He was interrupted by a snowy owl flying in through the rafters in the roof with a red envelope. "Shit" Sirius swore then turned to Lily and said "That's James owl"
"No" lily said in disbelief as the owl flew down the Gryffindor tower and dropped the letter in front of James who didn't move to pick it up and open it, he just sat there staring blankly at it. "James, " lily said softly putting her hand on his shoulder knocking James out of his daze, with every eye in the great hall on him he lifted up the letter with shaky hands and opened it to read:
Dear Mr Potter we are incredibly sorry to inform you that this
morning your father ,Fleamont Harrold Potter, was killed in doing
his services for the wizarding world, your mother was informed earlier today.
Your farther was killed by the use of an unforgivable curse cast by
The dark lord himself, our information says he put up a great fight.
sorry for your loss.
The ministry of magic
James let go a breath he didn't realise he was holding, and let a tear roll down his cheek. He slowly handed Sirius the letter before standing and walking out of the hall, all eyes on him but no care about it. "James." Remus called after him also standing. "Let him go, Mr Lupin." Dumbledore said "The loss of a loved one can be devastating, let us eat." As all eyes turned back to the headmaster none noticed a group of Slytherins leave the hall.
"Well well well, Potter a little sad are you? Is your little perfect life falling apart." Snape taunted cornering James in the hallway.
"Fuck off Snivilus."
"Why? you usually like our to and fro."
"Not right now, Snape."
"Awww poor little Potter. What-" But he was cut of by James grabbing him and slamming him against the wall.
"Say another word I dare you" James snarled in his face.
"Your surrounded Potter. Go on, do your worst."
"No Snape. Your surrounded" Remus said as he Sirius, Peter, Lily and Marlene moved around them. The rest of the Slytherins took one look at the Gryffindor's and ran for it. "Still feeling confident Snivilus?" James snarled.
"James," Lily pleaded "Let him down."
"Don't you get it?, I can't, he works for him. His leader killed him."
"Who J?" Marlene asked already knowing the answer but still needing James to say it out loud.
"My dad!" James yelled as he punched Snape in the stomach. "Your uncle, the man who took Sirius in. Do you get it yet?"
"Mr Potter." Dumbledore said as he came around the corner. "Would you please drop Mr Snape." James let out a staggered breath but complied all the same, letting Snape fall and allowing him to run back to the dungeons. "James," Dumbledore said.
"No just- let me- leave me alone." James said tears freely running down his face now before taking off down the corridor.
"J?" Marlene called after him with tears in her eyes. When James didn't turn back Lily pulled her into a hug trying to control her own tears too.
"Why don't you two go back to the heads common room? We'll find James." Peter suggested. "Yeah, ok." lily agreed, taking Marlene's hand in her own as the boys started to follow James. "Boys, don't let him do anything stupid."
"Don't worry we won't."
James was sitting all alone in the astronomy tower when the rest of the Marauders found him. James and his farther had been really close, the two had done everything together when James was younger. James's dad had bought him his first prank set, his first broom, he was there when James got his wand, only he could calm James down when he lost his temper, only he understood fully the way that James's mind worked how it wouldn't shut down or be still.
"James?" Sirius asked. James hadn't realised his brothers were in the room with him until Sirius spoke. "He's dead." James voice broke. "He's dead."
"I know, I know." Sirius kept repeating as he pulled James into his arms. After what felt like an eternity James felt Remus and Peter join the hug. The four sat there crying at the thought that the man they all considered a father figure was no longer with them, knowing they wouldn't see his cheery smile again or have him sneak some firewisky into their hot chocolates. The war had taken another victim, one that would affect four wizards that the Dark Lord would wish it hadn't.
