The girl in the room immediately looked up from her book and smiled. She had fairly short hair that was faded pink, Phil guessed that she dyed her hair a while ago and needed to redye it. The girl had a feeding tube which confused Phil as the book she was reading was a cookbook but who's to judge.
"Hello, I'm Phil, your new doctor."
"Hello, I'm Niki, your new patient." They both smiled at each other, and Niki adjusted her feeding tube. Phil checked his file as usual. Niki Nihachu, 14 years old, has intestinal failure, probably not deadly but still sucks that she can't eat for the rest of her life.
"Well, have you been breathing ok?" Phil decided he should get on with the check up and converse after.
"Yeah, sometimes it's a problem when I sleep but regularly I can breathe fine."
"Is it like suffocating, unable to breathe or is it like you have a stuffy nose or sore throat so breathing is difficult?"
"More the stuffy nose one, I guess."
"Ok, and other than that how are you feeling?"
"I'm ok, just a bit sad I can't really eat. I'm hoping to make some of these recipes for my friends though." Niki handed the cookbook she had earlier over to Phil, almost all of the things she had bookmarked were deserts. From chocolate chip cookies to Crème brûlée she wanted to make it all. Philza nodded and thought about how they could make it possible, maybe after dinner they could ask to use the kitchen.
"My wife loves baking too, maybe she could come over and help you out." Niki gasped and nodded, clearly loving the idea.
"That sounds so fun, thank you! Also I never usually see other girls around so that would be amazing." Phil nodded and quickly texted Kristin, almost immediately she texted back agreeing to come over sometime to bake with Niki.
"She sounds about as excited as you, I'll work on finding a time but it's definitely important to do the things that make you happy."
"Thank you Phil! It means a lot that even on your first day you're going out of your way to help me and make me happy when most people would have just left after I said I was medically speaking fine." The voice Niki spoke with was so genuine it made Phil want to cry. He felt accomplished, he was there to care about people not just their illness and Niki thanked him for doing just that. Niki saw Phil look as if he was gonna cry and opened her arms. Phil took the invite and hugged the girl.
"Thank you kiddo, It means more than you think."
"I could say the same, It means the world that you are kind. I'm more than an illness but all doctors no matter where they are now at some point treated their patients like they only were what hurt them, I'm just glad you've learned that it's not right." Phil nodded and tried his best to contain himself.
"How many others are you gonna see today?"
"Well you're the 6th so four more."
"Are Tommy and Wil doing well?"
"Yeah, they are both doing good, I took Tommy to breakfast because he said he didn't get out often."
"Thank you for that, unless Wil's heart rate is low he doesn't usually grab Tommy and take him out because they argue sometimes and that's not good for his heart."
"Yeah, Tommy tried to get me to pass some lie onto Wilbur and some guy named Techno to probably start conflict."
"Yeah, that sounds like him." They both smiled and Phil took this as a good opportunity to wrap it up.
"Well Niki, I'll see you soon."
"Bye Phil." And with that he only had 4 more people to meet
