"fighting with him was like trying to solve a crossword and realizing there's no right answer"
'come on harley just grab his hand' she told herself as they walked side by side down the street 'he's practically your boyfriend.'
'i'm just gonna do it' she thought after finally hyping herself up enough. she swung her hand a little so it made contact with his and she made an attempt to interlock their fingers but he pulled his hand up. she dropped her hand back to her side but a pit formed in harleys stomach. he didn't want to hold hands. if he wanted to hold hands he would've grabbed her hand himself. she felt stupid.
she knew he wasn't one for the handholding and such but anytime they were in public dallas pretended like they were just friends. he didn't kiss her in public, didn't hold her hand, sometimes he made it a point to walk by anyone else. she knew she shouldn't be offended by such stupid things but he used to make out with the girls he brought around right in the drive in as a way to tell people to back off.
"hey dal?" harley questioned fiddling with her fingers.
"yeah?" he said still looking forward.
"did i do something wrong." she said looking down. dallas spun around fast and looked at the girl.
"harley, you didn't do anything wrong. is this about the hand thing, i don't like holding hands i like my hands accessible."
"that was such a bullshit excuse and you know it."
"it's just that someone could see."
"and your embarrassed. got it." she said walking away before he grabbed her arm.
"harley you know that's not it. just a lot of people wanna piss me off and especially with the rumble and everything- i just want you to be safe."
"and i want to be able to hold your hand or kiss you in public. don't you think i deserve that dal. it almost seems to me like you care more about them than you care about me."
"harley that's not true and you know it. maybe you should be with someone who can give you what you want though." he regretted the words the second they poured from his mouth.
"maybe i should."
dally's heart crushed but he was glad she was leaving. she was safer that way. or at least thats what he would tell himself to ignore how he actually felt.
harley wasn't sure if it was considered breakup, can you break up with someone you never dated? although it felt like they had dated. the pain for sure felt like they had. by the time she made it to her house she didn't bother to go to her room. she layed on the kitchen floor. the cool tile felt nice against her face which was warm from crying. she fell asleep right there. she didn't want to break up, whether she thought she deserved it or not she would've stayed dally's little secret, it wasn't worth losing him. besides they could be together in-front of the gang and that's all that really mattered to her. but she lost him anyways and she had no choice but to blame herself.
the next morning harley didn't go to school, and she didn't stop by the curtis house. she didn't want to make dally uncomfortable so she stayed back. she knew it was dumb, dating your friend. they had all been friends for forever, she didn't really have anyone else. harley knew that meant she had to face dally, and they had to be friends again. but she was giving herself today to be sad.
dallas had tried to do his day as usual and pretend he didn't care. as he did so however he learned it was more difficult then he thought. he walked to the high school before realizing he probably wasn't supposed to walk harley home, yet he stayed and waited to see if she'd come out. he wasn't sure what to do next since on a normal day he would walk her home. so he went to the curtis house and watched the door the whole time. it didn't help that everyone thought to ask him where harley was. what was he supposed to say "we broke up because i'm a shit guy and told the only girl i ever cared about to go." he didn't even know where harley was right now, probably at home. he decided to go 'look for her' so people would stop asking. he decided if he came back without harley he'd look stupid so he stopped in-front of her little house and stared at it. he wasn't sure who he expected to open the door but no one did. he knocked again and when no one answered that time he opened the door. he called her name wandering through the empty house.
"shit." he mumbled walking back towards the front door that suddenly opened to reveal harley and steve with what dally knew to be harley's breakup ice cream, mint chip.
"what the hell?!" she asked. she had on an oversized sweater and her face was tear stained. "why the fuck are you in my house?"
"i- uh-" dally started but harley's glare made it hard to come up with an excuse.
harley gestured towards the door and dally sighed walking out it. to his surprise harley followed him and sat on her porch.
"what do you want?"
"im sorry."
"is that all you needed to say?" she asked standing up. and in dallas winstons mind he didn't realize what he needed to say so he watched harley walk inside slamming the door behind her.
