Stefan.. What are you- oh my god." Y/N gasped as she was rendered speechless by the sight before her.  Stefan looked to her, eyes wide as blood trickled from his lips.

Dark veins pulsing around his horrifyingly darkened eyes. He too was speechless. The feelings of hunger and desperation leaving his body as his face transitioned back to normal.  Y/N was frozen in place.

Internally her mind was screaming at her to run. Run as far away as possible. As far away from him, that monster, as possible. However, something inside her couldn't quite tear her eyes away.

Stefan was quick to try and wipe up the blood from his face as he took a step towards her. The only thing he could be somewhat thankful about was that he wasn't feeding from a human, not that that made things any better.

She stepped back, holding out her hands as a barrier between them. "Don't." she spoke, shakily. "Don't come any closer."  "Y/N, I can ex-"  She cut him off. "No. I.." she tried swallowing the lump that formed in her throat as tears welled up in her eyes. "

Stay away from me." with that she finally ran.  He didn't bother trying to run after her. He knew she needed space and time but he didn't know if she'd ever speak to him again. That was one thing he didn't think he'd be able to cope with. He couldn't picture the idea of losing one of his closest friends.

He headed home ashamed and guilt ridden. He should've told her from the beginning or maybe he shouldn't have gotten involved with her at all but it was too late now. He'd just have to try and fix things, if he even could.

It had been a few weeks since Stefan had last spoken to Y/N. He'd seen her in passing at school but she never stuck around long enough to speak. He'd given her as much space as possible, even took a couple of sick days so she wouldn't have to see him all the time.

All he wanted to do was go up to her and explain everything but he couldn't.  When the bell rang to signal the end of the school day, Stefan headed home.

He walked through the front door of the boarding house, tossing his bag down to the floor and walking into the living space.  "You've been more broodier than usual, brother." Damon spoke from his position lounging on the red couch, drink in hand.  Stefan rolled his eyes. "Little early to be drinking, brother." He gave a false smile.  "

I think you need a drink. Then you can tell me what's gotten you so cheery lately." Damon smirked, standing to pour Stefan a drink and to refill his own glass.  "I-" Stefan was interrupted by a knock at the door.  Damon was quick to answer it, a smile on his face. "Elena. Y/N. What are you two doing here?"  Stefan's head snapped up at the mention of her name. He quickly placed the glass in his hand down as he watched the girls walk into the room, closely followed by Damon.  "Well I thought that we could hang out. It's been so long since we last did." Elena smiled, trying to ease the awkward tension.  "What did you have in mind?" Damon spoke, wrapping his arms around his girlfriends waist.  "I just thought we could catch up, eat and drink?" she suggested.  "Sounds like a plan! I'll go get some more glasses and alcohol."

Damon kissed Elena's cheek before heading to the kitchen.  "I'll go help him." Elena smiled as she quickly rushed out of the room to follow him.  Stefan and Y/N were left standing alone at opposite ends of the room. The awkward tension resurfacing.  "I-I'm gonna head home. Tell Elena I wasn't feeling well." She spoke before heading to the front door, avoiding any eye contact with him.  She'd just made it outside when she heard Stefan's voice. "Y/N, wait!"  She stopped.  "I'm sorry. Please just let me explain and then you can do whatever you want with what I tell you.

Just hear me out, please." He spoke.  She took a deep breath and slowly turned towards him. After a moment she mustered up the courage to finally look at him. "Fine."  Stefan wasn't sure where to start. He didn't think he'd even get this far but he was glad that he did. Glad that she was finally looking at him, speaking to him even if it possibly was for the last time.

Stefan began to tell her everything. Everything about his past, how he became a vampire. Everything up to this very moment.  "I thought vampires were a thing of fantasy. Not real. My mind has been a mess. I didn't know what to say or think or feel." she let out as tears began to fall.  "I'm sorry you found out this way, that's not what I intended." He looked at her with sadness, trying to fight back his own tears.

"Were you ever going to tell me?" she spoke softly, wrapping her arms around herself for warmth and comfort.  "I...I don't know." He sighed. "Not a lot of people believe it or can even cope with it."  After a moments silence, Y/N spoke up again. "I think I would've have coped. Granted, it would have took some time but I think I would've tried to understand. I just wish you would have told me."  "I'm sorry. I guess I was scared that you'd only see me as a monster like everyone else." his own tears began to fall.

"You're not a monster, Stefan. Yeah it's not the most normal thing but you were young and I don't think you fully understood what you were getting yourself in to. I couldn't even imagine the things you've had to go through all these years."  "I don't deserve you being nice to me." He looked down to his feet, letting the guilt sweep in once more.

"You've told me the truth even if it wasn't supposed to happen this way. I appreciate that. I'm sorry for blanking you for so long but I needed to get my head straight.

It's still going to take some time for me to get my head around things but I'd rather do that with you." she took a step towards him. Slowly, she lifted his chin to look at her. "Even after everything...I've missed you, Stefan.  Stefan smiled, warmly. "I've missed you too, Y/N."

She pulled him into a tight hug and he buried his head in her neck. Enjoying being back in each others presence.  "We should probably head inside now. It's cold and they'll be wondering where we are." Y/N smiled as she pulled back.  "Thank you."  "

For what?" she let out a slightly confused laugh.  "For listening. For trying to understand." He smiled, softly.  "Anytime." she smiled back. "Now come on, I'm cold." she giggled as she pulled a smiling Stefan back into the boarding house.
